The 14th Dalai Lama was born Lhamo Döndrub, the 5th child of a large family in the farming village of Qinghai. Lhamo Döndrub (or Thondup) was born on 6 July 1935 to a farming and horse trading family in the small hamlet of Taktse.His mother, Diki Tsering, gave birth to him on a straw mat in the cowshed behind the house.
