Dear Parents and Staff

Since our first positive case of Covid – 19 on Tuesday evening of last week, the number of positive cases has now grown to 22. Whilst this is a significant increase, it is not entirely unexpected, as this is reflective of the growth in the number of cases across our state. The positive aspect that we can take from the infections are that, in most cases, the symptoms have been reasonably mild and that the number of close contacts has been kept to a minimum due largely to the extended weekend that we have just experienced and the change to regulations with regard to the wearing of masks and the definition of the close contacts rule. As the number of positive cases increases, we are conscious of the possibility of overwhelming our community with constant updates. This morning there were students who tested positive in two of our classes and the parents of the children in the Year levels were informed via the following letter.

Big picture

As we move forward and, it would appear, that the number of cases will increase, we will send a letter similar to this to the parents of the Year level concerned. A brief update will be included in the newsletter each week which will include relevant information that we receive from the Health Department and Catholic Education WA.

A number of parents have chosen to keep their children home from school due to their concerns regarding the spread of the Covid – 19 virus. It is certainly not my place to tell parents how to manage their children’s welfare, but I am duty bound to point out the expectations regarding school attendance. This is that all children and staff are expected to attend school unless they have been directed by the Health Department or the school to isolate due to either contracting the virus or being a close contact. As of this morning, the definition of close contact has changed and I will be informing families of the regulations as they are provided to me, but the decision that some parents have taken to keep children home as they are close contacts of close contacts is not appropriate.

We will continue to support our families as best we can and are currently offering face-to-face teaching for all who are expected to attend school. Only those who are directed to isolate will receive remote learning as it is very difficult for the staff to manage both platforms. I trust I have the support of our community in our endeavours to maintain as “normal” a learning environment as possible for all of our children. I am very happy to discuss any issues or concerns with parents. Please make an appointment through the school office if you wish to do this.

Whilst it is disappointing that we won’t be able to hold our Reconciliation Sacramental evening this year, I’m sure the children are still very excited about meeting with Fr Quynh over the next two Wednesdays to receive the Sacrament. Please keep these children, their families and teachers in your prayers at this very special time in their Spiritual journey.

First Reconciliation sessions:

  • Year 3M and children from Year 4 – 6 - Wednesday 16 March at 9.45am
  • Year 3P - Wednesday 23 March at 9.45am

Thank goodness we are able to go ahead with this event next Monday, 14 March at Bayswater Waves Aquatic Centre. Whilst we can’t have the same level of assistance from our parents this year, Brett Webb has everything under control for a great day of competition and fun. To ensure that everyone has an enjoyable, safe day, please note the following:

  • We request that only immediate family attend the Carnival to support the students.
  • Students will need to stay in their factions within their Year group with one of their class teachers.
  • Unfortunately, no parents will be able to assist with the Carnival.
  • Students will need to wear masks on the bus with a bus allocated for each year group.

Sacrament of Penance

Due to the current COVID restrictions we have had to make some changes to how the children will be receiving the Sacrament of Penance.

Parent/child workshop information has been sent home this week to all families who has a child that will be receiving the Sacraments. Please work through this with your child and return the activities by Friday 11 March.

Reconciliation Celebration:

3M Reconciliation: Wednesday 16 March at 9.45am

3P Reconciliation: Wednesday 23 March at 9.45am

Children from other Year levels who have enrolled to receive the Sacrament will be allocated one of the Wednesdays and parents will be advised once this has been determined. Parents are welcome to attend however, due to group gathering regulations, siblings and extended family will not be able to join us.
