Wood Stork
Mycteria Americana
Where is the Wood Stork Found?
In North Carolina Wood Storks are most often found in the south eastern portion of the state. The Wood Stork can also be found in many other southern states such as Georgia, Florida, Mississippi, and South Carolina.
Why is the Wood Stork Endangered?
The Wood Stork is in danger because of many factors. One of the largest one is habitat loss, people destroy freshwater marshes and wetlands to build homes and other buildings. Another reason is hunting, before the stork became endangered people would often kill them for sport.
What is Being Done to Help?
The wood stork is now endangered and therefore illegal to hunt, this allows them to repopulate all year long. North Carolina is trying to cut back on habitat loss. While it has not stopped entirely this helps them to find a home to nest.
