Everything starts with a strong foundation.
Food for thought:
When building skyscrapers, builders don’t start by just building up. They start by digging below the ground in order to create a foundation of stability. Engineers carefully design these buildings on bedrock. The strong foundation of bedrock helps the buildings reach incredible heights. The higher the skyscraper you want to build, the stronger foundations you need. Without these strong foundations, the skyscraper will collapse. Educators are like skyscrapers. We are building educational foundations for our students. Each year, teachers build levels of knowledge on top of the previous level. We are creating levels of stability for our student’s future. If we want to build up we have to first dig deep and develop that strong foundation. Today I want to encourage you to do some digging. Carefully construct lessons that lay strong foundations. Execute these lessons to be as strong as possible. Strong like concrete. Everything starts with a strong foundation.
Do you notice students struggle to transition quickly and quietly between activities? It is important for students to transition quickly and quietly to maximize instruction time and maintain their focus. Here is how to improve transition times in your class:
1. Be sure you have all student’s attention (click Attention Getters for examples).
2. Clearly explain expectations.
3. Prepare kids for your signal to start transitioning.
4. Initiate the transition using the signal.
5. Watch closely and give immediate feedback. Draw attention to those who are modeling your expectations.
Note: Don't forget to give Caught Being Good passes and Positive Office Referrals to students who are displaying one or more of the three R's: Respect, Responsible, and/or Ready!
