"Oh! The Places We'll Go!"
WHAT'S NEW? (May 14th, 2016)
Your children did an amazing job on their Civil War Archives Projects! They chose a topic, researched by looking through books and searching the Internet, and chose a tech tool to present. I was very impressed with the final products. Thanks for your support at home.
On Wednesday, Ms. Dames and Mrs. Mowery presented information to the fifth graders
about Erin's Law. What is Erin's Law? Erin's Law requires all public schools in each state to implement a prevention-oriented child sexual abuse program. The children were educated on safe touch, unsafe touch, safe secrets, and unsafe secrets, and how to get away and tell an adult immediately. It is important to talk to your child about not staying quiet if something like this should ever happen to him/her.
The end of the year is quickly approaching! Our 5th Grade Golden Folder Assembly will take place on the last day of school, Thursday, June 9th. This is not a "graduation" ceremony, however, it is a celebration of how the students have grown as writers over their years at Greenbriar. A collection of their writing has been saved in a Golden Folder and passed on to the next teacher each year. Parents are invited to attend this assembly and stay to watch the video portion of the yearbook after. The celebration start at 1:00.
This coming Monday, May 16th Student Council will be selling Ice Pops. Your child may purchase an Ice Pop at lunch or by the flagpole after school. They are $0.50 each. Adults and siblings are able to purchase them also. The money raised will be donated to the Epilepsy Foundation. The students are encouraged to wear PURPLE on Monday to support this cause.

Next week is a busy one! We have an author visit and Art Adventure scheduled for Monday, our State Science test on Tuesday, an All-School Assembly on Wednesday, the GB Open House in the evening on Thursday, and Henna Day on Friday.
Since there is so much going on for our 5th graders, we will NOT have Spelling and Vocabulary next week.
Have a nice weekend!

This week the students presented their Civil War Archives projects. It was a pleasure to see! Their speaking and listening skills are improving and their confidence in presenting has definitely gone up! Quite a few of the students tried out new tech tools and did a fantastic job with their final product! Learning something new is always a bit scary and time consuming, so their effort was noted.
We were so impressed by the students ability to recite The Gettysburg Address! Thank you for the encouragement to practice at home.
Writer's Workshop
This week in Writer's Workshop, the students continued to research and gather photos for their informational books. They created a Table of Contents by organizing their topics and subtopics. The students also started brainstorming about a new assignment. They are to write a paper based on three questions about Lincoln. They will decide exactly what they want to learn about his life and craft a final product. Be sure to look for it at our Open House on Thursday.
Reader's Workshop
This week in Reader's Workshop, the students read dispatches, performed plays, and played Battle Jeopardy. They also read about the McLean family, as mentioned above.
