RISD Elementary Parent Newsletter

Week of 1/28/19

Message from Julie

Dear RISD Elementary Parents,

Mother Nature has certainly been cruel this winter! I have been obsessively looking at the long range forecast, and have noticed that Thursday is yet again looking like terrible weather - extremely cold. If this is the case, and the weather doesn't get about 6 (the current forecast), we will have to cancel Winter Program. Skiing will still have the ability to go (with parents), but I cannot in good conscience send our kids out in this weather. I am going to continue to monitor the situation, and will be back in touch on Wednesday at 10AM with a final decision.

Speaking of Mother Nature's cruelty, we are currently at 6(!!!) snow days. I know that Dr. Arbour is working on a survey to see people's thoughts about making up snow days in more unconventional ways. Be sure to fill it out and give your feedback when it is available.

We continue to work hard to bring our schools together! We will be having a "step up day" soon for our WES 4th grade in order to meet up with their new classmates. We are also working closely with the Academy in order to have 6th graders travel there in order to feel more comfortable. We are also working to plan our Winter Carnival - it will be the first one that both schools celebrate together! How exciting!

SME 4th graders have NAEP testing on Wednesday - just another way for them to demonstrate what they know and are able to do. We are also working as a staff to be sure that we have some good literacy curriculum decisions. If there is a parent interested in helping with this work, please let me know.

Great job to our 6th graders and their Chopped Jr. exhibition! They did such an incredible job on their project!

I think that's all the news that is fit to print today! Thanks for all your support to our staff and students!

Have you asked your SME student about what it means to get ROCKS? WES has been doing this great positive behavior intervention for years, and SME is lucky to get "in" on the action!

Outstanding Scholar

Each time a student or class demonstrates one of these characteristics, they receive a rock.

Does your student answer "fine" when you ask them how was school?
