Sierra Family Newsletter January 14, 2022

Message from the Principal

Hello, Sierra Families!

Thank you for your cooperation and partnership while we navigate the challenges of pandemic living and education. We deeply appreciate your efforts in making sure your children have as much access to school as possible by following the guidelines we must enforce to keep school/classes open and to keep our staff healthy and here to serve you and your children.

To that end, I'm so pleased that we've been able to have lunch outside this past week. That has really helped keep more students in classes and out of quarantine because students aren't in the lunchroom unmasked. We will continue to eat outside whenever conditions allow for it, and ask that you continue to screen your children for symptoms daily before sending them to school and continue to work with us if they have a close contact to a positive case outside of school.

Have a wonderful 3-day weekend!

Amy Westberg, Principal

CDE Partnership with Renaissance Learning Provides Gift of Literacy this Winter

As part of State Superintendent Tony Thurmond's literacy initiative to get all California students to read by third grade by 2026, the California Department of Education (CDE) has partnered with Renaissance Learning, Inc. to ensure that every student can access thousands of reading resources from December 1, 2021, to January 31, 2022. The myON digital library and news articles in multiple languages can be accessed for FREE by all pre-K to grade 12 students in California. All books downloaded during the two months are able to be read offline. Schools are asked to provide the access code to unlock these free resources for students and families. Please use the Family Letter Templates to share this news, login code, and message with families in your school communities: Renaissance Learning Family Letter-English; Renaissance Learning Family Letter-Spanish. Learn more in this recent Letter from Superintendent Thurmond.

Want to get use of a free Chromebook for your child?

Click the image below if so! Even if you have a PC or tablet at home that your child can use for homework and other school activities, Chromebooks are optimized for completing work since they are seamlessly integrated and made for use with Google Apps for Education (Docs, Slides, Gmail, and more!) that our students in RUSD use throughout their K-12 experience. This program is NOT income-based. PLEASE sign up for each child if you haven't already! Thank you!
Big picture

Are you cleared to volunteer?

To ensure compliance with RUSD and the state of California's volunteer policies, parents who wish to volunteer on campus during the school day must have:

RUSD Policy:

  • Fingerprinting completed for RUSD specifically. Prior fingerprinting done for any agency or organization other than RUSD will not be accepted. Fingerprinting takes approximately 72 hours to clear.
  • Current Tuberculosis Test (TB). TB tests expire every 4 years and must be renewed in order to volunteer. TB Tests take approximately 48-72 hours for results and results must be brought to the office.

State of California Policy:

  • Vaccination status or proof of a current negative COVID test uploaded to the link included in the email from Informed K12. If you have not received this email, please let the office know. Details about this are included in the Informed K12 email.

To check your volunteer status, please call the office or email our Secretary, Kimberly Ervin, at

Sierra VAPA News

We are starting a choice-based art studio in VAPA for grades 4-6 and modified choice stations for K-3. A studio approach will allow students to have more agency in the themes and media they choose to use during their VAPA time. I will still offer guided lessons but am dedicated to offering time to work on projects that are personal and passionate to the students. A big hit this week was our sculpture center. I much appreciate donations of cardboard in different shapes and sizes. All the unusual packing materials make for amazing creations. Help cutting the cardboard down to manageable sizes would be a plus. My maximum size for storage is about 11x17. The painting center was also a hit. Donations of baby wipes, cleaning wipes, and wax paper would also be appreciated.

Thank you!

Lisa Johnson - VAPA/IB Coordinator

Hello Sierra families!

Our Sierra families are one of our most precious resources and what makes Sierra such a special place. We are excited to welcome back volunteers on campus and are planning for other opportunities for our family community to engage with our students and staff. As we continue this school year, we are reaching out to our families to gather your interest in sharing your skills, professional or cultural experiences, hobbies, and other interests with our Sierra student community. Your passions will enrich our students’ education. Consider presentation skills, career experience, sharing a second language, arts and crafts, cultural traditions, being a guest reader, travels, tech experience and so much more! Please complete the form on the following link to share your interest.

Ms. Sharon was a kinder/1st grade aide at Sierra for over 19 years. She retired in late 2020 and sadly passed away last October. Ms. Sharon is fondly remembered by staff, parents, and students. In her honor, we are raising funds to place a memorial “Sharing Bench” on the kinder playground where students can rest, make friends, and remember to share kindness. Please click here to if you would like to contribute and share a memory of Ms. Sharon. Thank you to those who have already contributed.
