Sneak Peek of the Week Ahead...
THIS IS A 2 WEEK UNIT
WEEKLY THEME: How Does Your Garden Grow? Week 1
The Kingdom of Heaven is like a single sunflower, which was planted in a large field. When it died, a strong wind came and scattered about it's seed. Much of the seed took root and soon the field was filled with bright yellow sunflowers. If only all the new Sunflowers understood how to invest their seeds, then what a marvelous site we would be!
READING THING
If you close your eyes, you can even hear plants coming to life all around you. What a fun time to experience "How Does Your Garden Grow?" We will read a class set of The Carrot Seed, and sequence "How To Plant A Seed”. The nursery rhyme "Mary, Mary, Quite Contrary, How Does Your Garden Grow? will be acted out by making flowers. Jack And The Bean Stalk, will come to life as each child receives a "magic" bean and must decide what adventure it will take them on. Story maps will be made as we compare the fairy tale version to Jim and The Beanstalk (a modern day version).
Story maps (whether done in pictures or written out) bring organization and meaning to what is read. They improve comprehension. You will see several coming home dealing with details and sequence. We'll also read the Parable of The Sunflower. Just watch a sunflower during a day. It keeps its face toward the sun all day. What a great comfort and example to us all to keep our faces toward The Son!
The Carrot Seed
When a little boy plants a carrot seed, everyone tells him it won't grow. But when you are very young, there are some things that you just know, and the little boy knows that one day a carrot will come up. So he waters his seed, and pulls the weeds, and he waits ...
A Seed Is a Promise
Inside every seed is the possibility that a new plant will grow. This book explains in simple language why that is true, where seeds come from, and how seeds grow.

NUMBER WORKS
We will continue working on our facts. Subtraction always seems to be a little harder for children that addition, so for the next two weeks, subtraction will be our focus.
Science Scoop
Science will merge with our reading/language this week as we learn about the process in which seeds sprout into plants. We will also learn how to identify the common parts of plants (stems, leaves, roots). On Wednesday, we will go to the science lab for our seed lab time.
Bible Basics
The Parable of the Sowing of Seeds will teach us about how the word of God is received by the different types of soil. The Word of God grows best in the fertile soil where it can take deep root.
April Bible Verse: Matthew 4:19
Come follow me, Jesus said, and I will make you fishers of men.

A NOTE FROM MRS. J
Dear Families,
Our farm field trip is just two weeks away. About 5-6 parents may ride the bus with our class. Please let me know as early as possible if you might be a bus rider or if you prefer to drive your own car. As stated earlier, your child may ride in the car with you if driving is your choice, but no other child may ride with you unless that child's parent is riding in the car with you. This is an all day trip and children will need to bring all of the items listed in the information packet I sent home on Friday. Please let me know if you have questions. This is a great and informative trip for the children. I love that the name of the farm is The Learning Tree Farm!
Blessings,
Kathie
