2000s Timeline

2008: Election
In the Election of 2008, Barack Obama ran on the Democratic ticket and John McCain ran on the Republican one. The winner was Barack Obama. He became the united States' first African American President.
2008: Obama's New Policies
After becoming President, Obama started working on a bailout of the Banks and the automobile industry. The bank bailout was meant to help jump start the economy. He also passed multiple new health care reform laws.
2011: Security Handed Back to Iraq's Government
The war in Iraq began in 2003. It started because of the suspensions of weapons of massive destruction in Iraq. It led to the execution of Saddam Hussein. After 8 years of fighting, in 2011, security was handed back to Iraq's government.
2012: Election
In the 2012 election, Mitt Romney ran for the Republicans and Obama ran for re-election. Obama won once again, becoming the first African American to serve two terms as president.
2014: End of War in Afghanistan
The War in Afghanistan started in 2001 as a result of the attacks of 9/11. After 13 long years, it was finally formally ended in 2014. US troops still remain there, but they are expected to pull out at the end of 2016.
End Of 2016: Draw Out
At the end of 2016, the last of the US troops in Afghanistan are meant to draw out, marking the final end of a conflict that has lasted since 2001. This will be a time to rejoice for the families whose loved ones have been away for the war.
