Happy 2016!
The kiddos were excited to get back to school and we got right back to learning.
In math were are working on decomposing numbers to 120 and comparing 2 digit numbers. We will aso be working on 1 more, 1 less, 10 more and 10 less. Family math day is Thursday, January 14th 11:35 - 12:30. The students will be showing parents activities that we do in class. Did you sign up to attend?
In reading we are working on nouns, verbs and adjectives. We have also been reading different versions of The Gingerbread Man. Today they shared their gingerbread person and writing. They were so creative and their writing was very descriptive.Everyone was able to guess their gingerbread person correctly. We are also reading many biographies about Martin Luther King Jr.
In writing we hare beginning informational writing. We will learn about Ben Franklin and Martin Luther King Jr. and write about them. We will finish our informational writing with an autobiograpy. More information will be coming on this project.
I will no longer be sending home paper flash cards for math. To meet standard (1.OAC.6) by the end of first grade, students must be fluent in addition and subtraction facts to 10. Fluency is knowing a fact in 3 - 4 seconds. In order to gain fluency, students need to practice facts daily. As we say in Room 129 "Practice makes improvement." Below are links for math fluency slides that students will use each night to practice. These links can also be found on my blog and also in each student's Google Classroom in homework.

I wish everyone a happy healthy 2016. I hope to send out a newsletter at least once a month. Please let me know if you find this newletter helpful.
