Canby High School Family Newsletter

For the Week of December 2nd to December 8th 2021

Principal's Message

Good afternoon Canby High School Students and Families!

Welcome to second trimester! We’re glad to see the return of our students after the extended holiday weekend. We hope everyone had an enjoyable and relaxing Thanksgiving break.

There’s a lot going on as we transition into Winter and the holidays. With new classes, there are new challenges and expectations. Winter sports competitions are starting this week. And the second part of our canned food and coin drive has started.

Last night, our elite choir, the Cantalinas, kicked off the holiday season with a stunning performance at the Grotto. Check out their performance here.

We are beginning construction on the baseball facility press box at the varsity baseball field. Please note that during construction we will close off the path between Douglas St and the track. Please either walk down Douglas St to 4th or enter off the grass fields near the Tennis courts.

And finally… Following state direction, the district recently amended our mask protocols and students are no longer required to wear masks outdoors. Please remember masks are still required for all indoor activities. Thank you for the support!

Stay healthy and strong, Canby! Go Cougars!

Leadership Coin Drive

Canby High School is partnering with the Canby Kiwanis to collect money for their annual Community Food and Toy Drive. This year, Kiwanis is collecting money to purchase grocery gift cards to give to families in need, here in Canby. They are also collecting money to purchase gifts and toys for children in the community to make sure kids have a bright Christmas.

During the week of Monday, Dec 6 through Thursday, December 9, CHS Leadership will be distributing "Coin Drive" buckets around the school. Students who are able, can donate coins and dollar bills to these secure buckets to help contribute to the Food and Toy Drive.

As a parent, if you would like to help contribute, you can send cash or check donations with your student to school, to be delivered to these donation buckets. Donation buckets will be located in the Main Office, Counseling Office, Library, in Room 215 (Leadership Room), and in select classrooms. Checks can be made payable to "Canby Kiwanis Foundation"

Join Us-Employment in Canby Schools

While parent volunteering continues to be on hold until further notice, we do have employment opportunities in our schools for part-time positions like instructional assistants, nutrition services, custodians and more. We are also seeking on-call substitutes for those positions, which would provide even greater flexibility. Visit our employment website to view all current opportunities.

Upcoming Parent Input Opportunities

We are still collecting names of interested parents who want to serve on committees that provide planning input for the future CHS bond construction projects. Our partners in this process, Mahlum Architects, will soon be looking for more community input through focus groups. If you are interested, please respond by completing this form.

CHS Video Broadcast Recruitment

Parents and students, do you have an interest in live streaming and announcing events? Would you like to help CHS and the community? Do you want to be a part of our Cougar team?

We are hoping to create a live stream broadcast network of volunteers to cover CHS sports and activities in a professional manner in keeping with the hard work that our students and athletes put in. Our vision is to develop a dynamic partnership with CTV-5 to support these broadcasts with interested students and adults providing the camera work, production, and commentary. If you have an interest in participating with this after school club, please contact Tyler Francke with The Canby Current and Now Hear This Studios at francke@canbyfirst.com. Please include your contact information and any prior media experience.

Attendance and Sick Students

To ensure the accuracy and efficiency of our attendance process, please remember the following guidelines:

  • To report an absence, call our attendance line at 503-263-7210 or email chs-attendance@canby.k12.or.us.

  • Please report an absence as soon as possible and no later than 48 hours after the absence.

  • If your student needs to leave class for an appointment, inform the attendance office as soon as possible. This will help us ensure that your student receives a note to leave class in a timely manner.

Remember that attendance matters and students who attend class regularly are more likely to stay on track, graduate on time, learn deeply, and get the most from their high school experience. Please partner with us to ensure great attendance and to remove any attendance barriers.

Bus Transportation

  • If you have any questions or problems with school bus transportation, please email Student Transport of America (STA) at canbyschoolbus@ridesta.com.
