Hour of Code - December 7 - 13, 2015

We live in a world surrounded by technology. And we know that whatever field our students choose to go into as adults, their ability to succeed will increasingly hing on understanding how technology works. But only a tiny fraction of us are learning computer science and less students are studying it than a decade ago. That's why Brooke and I encouraging our entire school to join in on the largest learning event in history: The Hour of Code. Engaging students in the Hour of Code at Trantwood is a statement that we are ready to teach these fundamental 21st Century skills. This is a chance to change the futures of our students, school, and Virginia Beach. See http://hourofcode.com/us for details and help spread the word. Students can also participate in the Hour of Code by visiting http://code.org/learn.

Collaboration Days - Yippee!

The Department of School Leadership has informed us that we have been allocated l full day of collaborative planning per teacher. These days have been provided for grade level collaborative planning, creating assessments, looking at student work, visiting classrooms, learning, etc.

  • Window for days: Dec. 3, 2015 - June 15, 2016
  • We will discuss during our collaboration how and when this time will be used

Captivating Every Student, Every Day!

There are 12.5 days until the Winter Break. For some students, the holidays are a very joyous time and for others, a very stressful time. To be well prepared for this, we encourage you to give special thought to each student in your class.

When planning, ask yourself what strategy should I use that will enhance student engagement? What strategies should I avoid at this time of year because they don't challenge students to think about the learning target? What classroom arrangement will we need today or just for the next half hour so that my kids can think? Can read? Can write? Can collaborate? Can learn? How can I provide my students some time to build positive relationships as well as time for me to meet with them individually so I can get to know them better?

When planning, think about times when you will be listening to your students, not just for the answer you are expecting but for the unexpected answer as well. You know, the one that screams out "I need someone to love me, to hear me, and to honor me for who I am."

There's no doubt in my mind that every child at Trantwood has a special gift. In this season of gift giving, let's strive to help them take one more step closer to finding out theirs. The world need them and their gift. The world needs you and your gifts. Thank you for planning, teaching, and reflecting with each student in mind. After all, that is your gift. LAM

Technology Tips

REMOTE INVENTORY PREPARATIONS: Technology is conducting a remote inventory sweep in November, December and January of ALL devices that are connected, or should be connected, to the network. This includes desktops, laptops, printers, and eTablets (IPADS). It is extremely important that all assets are connected to the network between now and the end of January. If you have any of these devices assigned to you, please bring them to school and connect them to the network.

CHANGING PASSWORDS: Heed the calling of your computer when it tells you it's time to change your password. This message is not one to procrastinate about. It puts you and the TST in an uncomfortable position because the only solution is for the TST to contact the Help Desk. Then the Help Desk contacts your principal. Awkward...

UPDATES ON YOUR TEACHER LAPTOP: DOT pushes important updates to all computers monthly. When you get the popup that says "System changes are required by your IT Department," click on it, then select "Apply all required changes now" and Ok. The updates will run in the background. Your computer will run much more efficiently and safely when you follow these prompts each time you are prompted.
