WM Kindergarten Curriculum Update
April 2019
Reading and Writing
Reading
This unit we are introducing Nonfiction Reading. We launch students into the unit by telling them that reading is like an adventure! Readers become experts on topics by reading books, asking questions, and talking with others.
Writing
This month in writing, we will write all-about books on topics we love. We will also work on revising and making longer books. We will learn about text features such as diagrams, charts, glossaries, and pictures with labels - adding them to our own books.
Math
During number corner this month we will be talking about different tools that are used to measure using different attributes, spinning to collect frogs and toads, examining data, continuing to count to 100 by 10’s and 1’s, drawing to represent story problems and looking at the numbers in the 30’s and 40’s on the number line. We will be finishing up Unit 7 by using ten frames to add numbers to 20, story problems with addition and subtraction and counting tens and ones using various manipulatives.
Social Studies/Science
How can I help take care of the world? Students explore the three R’s - recycling, reusing and reducing - to learn about ways they can help take care of the natural resources in our world. In a series of skill building activities, they discover where garbage goes after it’s thrown away and learn specifically what they can do to recycle, reuse and reduce.
LMC - Library
We’ll be using Makerspace materials to work together to solve problems and meet challenges. Through these experiences, we’ll learn about teamwork and communication!
Music
Mrs. Spahn’s classes will be working on: Listening to and learning about Peter and the Wolf by Sergei Prokofiev and the instruments of the orchestra, including the difference between a solo and an ensemble.
Ms. Soltis’ classes will be working on: exploring the difference between steady beat (stays constant) and rhythm (long and short sounds). At the end of the month, we will begin studying the Carnival of the Animals by Camille Saint-Saens.
Technology
Students are creating original graphics and using clipart in drawing programs. Students are learning features of the computer program KidPix 3D, which is a creativity software for drawing and painting.
Art
What does it mean to be inspired? Where do artists get ideas? Why is it important for artists to explore and experiment? (Monoprint Butterflies, Exploration Stations)
PE
Students will participate in Spring fitness testing and our Track & Field Unit. We will try and get outside as much as possible as well!
