A Message from the Administration
Global Connections
By Jacqueline Parks
Some of the goals of Williston Schools are to reach beyond the walls of school, help students make global connections and to assist others in the world that are less fortunate. This year we have been fortunate to establish sister schools on the continents of Asia and Africa. A sister school serves as a school that we intentionally connect with in a variety of ways to build a relationship among the students and teachers.
The third and fourth grade teams have established a partnership with The Hands of Love (HOL) Educational Centre in Kenya, Africa. The Hands of Love Educational Centre serves children ages 3-8 who come from disadvantaged backgrounds. Hands of Love provides education, food and health care to students and their families. It is located in a very poor part of Kenya, where attending school is a privilege and not a given. Currently, our students are collecting change for HOL in hopes of raising $800 to purchase shoes for half of the students. The other half of the students already received shoes as a result of another fundraising effort. Students have already raised over $300 by collecting loose change in the front lobby each morning. We would also like to invite adults to consider making a donation via the following GoFundMe. https://www.gofundme.com/hol-shoe-drive
Meanwhile, our middle school has made a connection with a sister school in Changsha, China. Our connection with China is through Spiral International, a Vermont based organization which promotes building a strong cultural understanding between the two cultures. This relationship is just getting started, but we have hopes of being able to facilitate student exchanges, as well as staff visits. In early April, we were fortunate to host eight middle level students from China and had a fantastic experience learning from each other. Later in April, some of our students and teachers visited China through Spiral International and spent time in five schools, along with other educators and students from Vermont.
Understanding that many of our students will be engaged in careers that will have a multi-cultural and world connection, we are working to bring this larger world view into their educational experience at the elementary and middle level. We look forward to continuing our global connections next year and into the future.

ABS and Mosaic Team ART NEWS
Many thanks to our talented Artists for making this year’s Allen Brook Art Show a lively and engaging event and to our community members who support the children’s efforts and generously donate refreshments! I am grateful to the many people who chipped in to make our show the best it can be. Our dedicated maintenance staff helped to brighten our space prior to and following the show. Our fabulous kitchen colleagues once again baked and prepared healthy and tasty treats. Bonnie Sicard organized and printed the artists’ labels. Ally Roberts, Sara Dunphy, Lori Saladino, Celeste Plouffe, Cindy Pavlik, June Simmons, Linda Scott, Emily Ponce, Christina Sicard, Part 2 staffers and my student intern, Emily Coffrin – each made important contributions. My sincere gratitude goes out to John Terko for supporting the art program through the years. I hope I have not left anyone out because I am appreciative of your efforts and especially proud of our children. Thanks for the great teamwork!
Third and fourth graders will have had their choice of art displayed in the WCS Art Show by the time of this publication. Each Artist is currently practicing a variety of weaving techniques on his or her loom.

Summertime is almost here…
By Kelly A. Fitzpatrick, CY SAP @ WCS
Although it can be an exciting time of year with all the sun shine, warm temperatures and things to do it can also be a very dangerous time for kids. Here are some pointers to keep your family safe during the summer months.
Pilot State Fitness Assessment (new)
Vermont is piloting a new Fitness assessment in May using the FitnessGram tool. The state requires that we test our 4th, 7th, and 9th grade students in four areas: aerobic capacity, muscular strength, muscular endurance, and flexibility. Body composition will not be measured or reported. This assessment will be administered by certified Physical Education teachers. FitnessGram is a part of the Williston Central School Physical Education program. Our PE Staff will work to provide any accommodations or supports that individual students require during state testing.
Last school day for students is Friday, June 15.
