What's Up With Mammograms?
Do I even need one?
If you are over 40... A screening mammogram is a great way to check for breast cancer ~
- A mammogram is an low dose x-ray of your breasts
- They use x-rays to check for signs of breast cancer that you can't physically see.
- If you do have a tumor, it will show up on the x-ray in a different colour than your breasts.
What to Expect ~
- The procedure will take around 20 minutes tops.
- The breast is compressed in two flat plates for a few seconds while an x-ray picture is taken. Then, the same is done to the other breast.
- If anything starts to hurt, make sure you speak up! Don't be afraid to ask to stop the procedure.
- Once its over, your x-rays will be reviewed and the results sent back to you.
- If you need further testing, your facility will be sure to let you know
How to get one ~
- All you need to do is talk to a specialist or mammography facility about getting a screen done. Do a google search for facilities in your area.
- There are also many mammography facilities who let you book an appointment online.
- Try and schedule one for the week after your period. This way, your breasts won't be swollen or sore.
- Also, try and wear a two piece outfit. Remember, you'll be removing your shirt and bra!
Things to keep in Mind ~
- Mammograms mostly benefit women over 40.
- Younger women have denser breasts, making it difficult for the screen to be accurate.
- It's always a good idea to do further breast cancer tests, just in case the mammogram doesn't work.
