The Counseling Connection

May 2017

Hello Hawthorn Families,

We have officially brought another great school year to a close! Congratulations to Hawthorn’s 5th grade graduating class of 2017! I will miss each one of those amazing people and hope they come back to visit in the future!

We began this year with a goal of seeing 8% or fewer 3rd-5th grade students reporting that they feel left out at lunch or recess by May. We surpassed that goal every single month of this school year in seeing less than 1% of students feel excluded every month. We also met our goal of increasing the number of students reporting that Hawthorn meets their needs from 84% in the 2015-16 school year to 94% this year!

In the 2017-18 school year, we will continue to focus on including others, and making sure that Hawthorn is meeting the needs of our students but we will also work to insure that students understand the importance of accepting the differences of their peers. The 2016-17 district wide student survey reports 86.9% of students believe students respect the differences of other students at Hawthorn. This number does not put us at an “at risk” level in comparison with other schools in our district. However, in knowing how much our students value kindness and inclusion, I am certain that we can do better! Look for more information concerning counseling goals for the 2017-18 school year this fall!

If you have questions about the information shared in this final Counseling Connection of the 2016-17 school year, please let me know. I hope your family enjoys summer break!

Thank you,

Bianca Miller
