The Pirate Compass
Assisting Families in Navigating the Waters of High School
Principal's Message
It's been a busy January on the Pirate Ship. I'm trying a new format for family communication. Rather than a lengthy email, we thought a newsletter format would be better. In the coming months, we will include pictures and event reminders...I've just got to learn those features first, ha.
We hope this information finds you well. If you have questions or concerns, or would simply like to connect, please feel free to reach out.
With gratitude,
Kalin Cross

Attendance Help:
In Oregon, "attending school regularly" means that a student is attending over 90% of the time. We know that the message over the last few years has been to keep students home for illnesses because of strict COVID protocols. Now that those protocols aren't as strict, we are actively working to recover from learning loss and asking that students attend as often as possible. Research shows that students who miss school regularly miss out on learning resulting in poor grades.
We have a school-based health center that is staffed consistently and we also have the ability to test for COVID, should you/your student be concerned about that.
If there is a barrier to your student getting to school, we have a variety of resources and would love to partner with you however we can. Give us a call if you are in need of think-partnering to find solutions to student attendance.
Family Engagement Results:
-Welcoming- Do families feel like they belong on campus?
-Communication- Do we have systems in place for home-school communication that are inviting, useful, and set up for two-way communication?
-Information- Do families receive the information they need in order to function as an integral part of their child's school?
-Empowerment- Do our family participation programs invite involvement in learning, value families, as key resources, and engage the entire school community?
We are proud to share that our areas of strength are: Welcoming and Communication. Furthermore, PHS received a perfect score in the area of Welcoming: Parent Visits. We also had very positive feedback on our Communication regarding our website, social media, and the beautiful marquee in the front of the school.
We will be working on sharing information and empowering families to partner with us in the education of their students. We're already working on having information more easily accessible in our front office! Stay tuned for more!
