Ten Qualities of Successful Lessons
From Lesson Planning: Essential Strategies That Inspire Student Thinking & Learning
As we have completed our first half of the school year, it is important that we take a look at what makes a successful lesson.
Successful lessons result when teachers do the following:
- Plan lessons with their students in mind, not just the content
- Use a predictable lesson structure that allows students to grow academically and socially
- Make listening to student’s thinking the heart of lessons
- Never lose track of the lesson’s objectives
- Use facilitation techniques to probe students’ thinking
Students also play active roles in successful lesson implementation. Effective lessons engage students by giving them opportunities to do the following:
- Do most of the talking
- Work independently
- Develop social skills for successful peer interaction
- Experience a sense of community
Watching a new idea bloom in the minds of children is one of the most rewarding aspects of being a teacher. We are at our best when we design our classrooms so that collaboration, imagination, and community are at the center of the classroom.

Kognito Training for Youth Mental Health Awareness
Youth Mental Health Awareness Training
If you haven't done so yet, please sign up for Kognito Mental Health Awareness Training. The Florida Department of Education has partnered with Kognito Gold Standard Modules to provide supplementary online Youth Mental Health training. Youth Mental Health training is required by state law for all school district personnel.
There are 3 classes open on PLN for Kognito:
Support Staff Training: #29221 Kognito: Support Staff - Mental Health Awareness Training;
Instructional Staff Training: #29220 Kognito: Instructional - Mental Health Awareness Training.
The components are currently open, so please log on to PLN to register for your appropriate class.
The Kognito training will teach all Pinellas County Schools employees to be the effective eyes and ears of student mental health. The online training includes At-Risk Training Simulations that are presented through roleplay simulations. In the simulations, you will meet a virtual coach and learn what to do when concerned about a student, how to bring up concerns, increase connectedness, build resilience, and link students to support. The virtual coach will provide real-time feedback.
Student Led Conferences
As you plan for conference week, consider the suggested student led conference protocol below. Goal setting is a high impact strategy that promotes student learning gains. I will be reaching out to some of the parents of our students in need of the most gains to ensure that they are aware of our efforts to support the learning of their child. I may sit in on a few conferences. Student-led Conference to include administrator, parent, teacher, and student
Review FSA and MAP Data
Set goals and create action plans for student, teacher, and parent
Provide resources to assist the parent with supporting the student at home
Zero Tolerance Student Discipline Statue
“In order to ensure the safety of all students and staff, Florida law requires that all school staff immediately contact the school principal or assistant principal to report incidents of student behavior that pose a threat to school safety and other criminal activity. Please make sure you immediately report any misconduct of this type to the principal or AP and document the misconduct as needed. If you have any questions, please contact the principal.”

If you are interested in learning more about this opportunity, please let me know!
Transitional Phrases for Writing 3-5
I have attached the transitional phrases you may wish to use with your students. These phrases will be a game changer if we teach our scholars how to use some of these phrases. I encourage you to make sure your students know how to spell these words in the transitional phrases correctly. You may have your students to identify phrases they may use in their writing. This will help students show command of vocabulary as well as assist them with organizational flow!
My colleague Tracie Bergman shared this with her staff.
AVID CRT Training opportunities
Looking for an awesome training opportunity to add to your DPP? Looking for unique ways to group students and help them learn from each other? Or maybe you want to learn more about CRT strategies (Culturally Relevant Teaching)? If you answered yes to any of those questions, than AVID CRT training may be right for you! it will be a district mandate in the future for all staff to be trained in this component, so you may want to get a head start. It will align directly to our goal of closing our achievement gap and building student centered classroom environments. Below are current sessions available!
