This week at the pool...
KMSC news for 6/23/19 - 6/29/2019
Pizza Tonight!
We're holding our first pizza night tonight (6/23) during rafting at 5 p.m. and shortly after another fun afternoon of yard games from 3-4:30 p.m.!
The pizza will be from Ben Yehuda's and available right on the pool deck for $3 slice, $5 for two slices and $20 for an entire pie, cash or credit (a transaction fee will apply for the latter).
Wear the kids out by joining your friends for food and fun all afternoon at the pool!
Thanks to a donation from member Barbara Cleary, you'll be able to borrow electric air pumps from the pool to blow up your rafts and flotation devices, too!

Pool Closes Early Monday for Swim Meet
The pool will close at 4 p.m. tomorrow (Monday, 6/24) to make way for a home swim meet.
You can go for a swim at the Parkland Pool instead during the meet, after paying that pool's guest fees.
This arrangement made by your board with Parkland also will be in effect for the team's two other evening home meets Tuesday, July 2, and Monday, July 8.
The July 2 home meet date is new.
The Kangaroos and Diamond Farm Stingrays were chased out of the pool last week by thunder and lightning. They will be finishing that meet next week, weather permitting.
Relay Carnival
The team also will be hosting multiple teams for the Division O Relay Carnival at the end of this week (Sunday morning, June 30).
The pool will open for general swimming at noon. But everyone's invited to watch the 'Roos compete at this wildly fun meet!
Come cheer them on while enjoying breakfast, lunch, and snacks poolside from the Kangaroo Kafe.
Lap Swims
The team now has about 50-60 'Roos plus a pre-team of Joeys. When they're in the water for afternoon practices, up to eight of them are sharing lanes in order to leave two lanes open for lap swims by the rest of us.
To accommodate them all, the team also holds nighttime practices Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays after the pool closes. The team has allowed our adult members to swim with the Nightcrawlers (see photo at left) for a small fee designed to cover after-hour pool operating expenses.
Contact the team rep, Alyssa Parness, to see if the team can accommodate your lap swims in the evening.

First Ladies Night a Success
More than 15 ladies lazed in the pool Thursday (6/20) for our first Ladies Night of the summer.
The theme was Hawaiian and our host was our very own socials director, Sherri Spritzer (see photo below).
Former pool president Dawn Felsen showed us how to hula (see photo at left). Click here for a video of Dawn dancing at Ladies Night: https://www.facebook.com/mary.crowleyfarrell/videos/10100745821621126/ and https://www.facebook.com/mary.crowleyfarrell/videos/10100745821346676/
Two door prizes were awarded, one to Betty Hartnett and the other to, I want to say Maria Honeycutt, but I may be confusing her with Maria Hitchsfeld! (I was having a good time.)
The next Ladies Night will be Tuesday, July 16th, 7-10 p.m.
The pool will again close to non-party goers at 8:45 p.m.
Cost: $5 for adult pool members, $7 for their adult guests. Our free coupons aren't accepted for these events.
Bring a salad, appetizer or dessert to share. Soft drinks will be provided. Bring your own wine or beer.
No word yet on the theme but there will be a door prize raffle again.
We need RSVPs from at least 15 of our adult women members for this event to be a go. Sherri also needs one or two people to plan and host it.
Please contact her at sherri.spritzer@verizon.net. Also use that email address to RSVP, preferably by Sunday, July 14.

A Pool Fourth
We'll be holding our Annual Fourth of July Family Fun Day in 11 days to celebrate our nation's birthday!
Our pool's Fourth will run 1 p.m.-5 p.m. and feature fun family-friendly activities organized by our socials director, Sherri Spritzer (at right enjoying Ladies Night last week).
She needs some help though from some other parents willing to supervise the crafts and games, including the always-popular water balloon relay, loose change scramble, adult-children pool relays, and cannonball contest. She's planning prizes again!
You can reach Sherri at sherri.spritzer@verizon.com to volunteer.
The pool grill will be hot all afternoon and ice cream treats (kosher and non-kosher) will be made available while they last.
We'll be closing the pool at 6 p.m. so that everyone can get to the area's various fireworks!
Take Time for Swim Lessons
The swim team still has room in its lesson program for you!
The 'Roos manage our private and semi-private lessons for children and adults. Just contact the Swim Lessons Coordinator at KMSCLessons@gmail.com or
click here to register for lessons on the swim team's website. The lessons will run for as long as there's demand this summer.
Private and Semi-Private Lessons
The one-time registration fee for members is $20 per swimmer for the season, to be paid to KMSC.
Non-members also are welcome. Their one-time registration fee is $30 per swimmer for the season, also payable to KMSC.
Each private, one-on-one lesson will cost an additional $30 per half hour, paid directly to the instructor.
Each semi-private lesson arranged for and shared by a group of two or three students and one instructor costs a total of $45 per half hour, also paid to the instructor.
These lessons are separate from the group instruction that's going on for the members of the pre-team Joeys.
Group Lessons
The Joeys are youngsters generally under 8 years old who generally can get across a length of the pool somehow but are not quite ready for team competition. The team rep reports we have about 25-30 Joeys for the revived program this year.
The Joeys program requires registration with the team and is run by our swim team coaches on Monday, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays from 4:30-5 p.m.
These youngsters get their first taste of competition in kickboard races, the first of which were held during our home meet last week with the Diamond Farm Stingrays (see photos below from last week's home meet)!
It may not be too late for your youngster to have fun with the Joeys! To learn more about the swim team and its fees for Joeys, go to https://kangaroos.swimtopia.com .

President's Corner
We just had a crowd of some 25-30 people Friday night from St. Andrew's R.C. Church -- adults lounging by the grill, kids in the pool. That could be you and your group!
We've already had some birthday parties and other celebrations, too. Any member may host a pool party simply by contacting the membership director, Amie Wohlfarth, at kmsc-membership@kempmill.org or (240) 389-KMSC (5672) to reserve your date.
We'll keep the picnic area reserved for you and beef up staffing as necessary to accommodate the size of your group.
Guest passes may be used or the fee is $8 per non-member guest. Make sure to give Amie your planned headcount when you contact her!
Picnic Table Use
We heard you!
The board agreed last week to expand the areas where food can be eaten on the pool deck. It's clearly crowded by the Snak Bar and its cabana area!
Don't hesitate to set up your meals under the two cabanas nearest to the baby pool, too. This change is effective immediately.
After the team holds its Relay Carnival on June 30th, we'll also be moving a table or two more from the cabanas on the opposite side of the pool from the Snack Bar over to that food area.
We'll also be shuffling around the trash cans -- and we could use a few donations of more recycling bins from YOU. So far,m we've had only one such bin donated from a member. But we have a lot more trash this year than in the immediate past. Please help!
Just put in a call to the county's 311 for an additional bin and loan it to the pool.
