REMINDER!! 5th GRADE COVER CONTEST DUE DATE: FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 3rd
Instructions
1. This year’s theme title is: “Be a Rainbow in Someone Else’s Cloud.” -Maya Angelou
Because the theme is a quote you have to include the author’s name “Maya Angelou”
A Dolphin (our school mascot) is optional. So be creative!
2. The cover art must include the following words, “El Marino Language
School Yearbook” and “2022-2023” as part of the design. And, the title, “Be a Rainbow in Someone Else’s Cloud.” Maya Angelou
3. Please do not put your name on the cover. Instead, write your
name, teacher’s name, and room # on the back of the artwork.
4. Size: 8.5”x11” and must be in color! (paint, markers, colored pencils, crayons, etc) We aren't accepting digital art. It has to be done by hand.
5. We highly recommend using a thicker cover stock. Also using a thin black
marker to outline the illustration and coloring it in with colored pencils or thin markers seems to have the best clarity.
6. The artwork must be in portrait format, not landscape (i.e. vertically oriented)
7. Due Date: Friday, February 3, 2023. Please turn it in to the front office
of the school by the end of the day. Any work that comes in after the
due date will not be accepted. Winners* will be announced via
Dolphin Splash in February.
*There will be 1 winner and 4 runner-ups. (The runner-ups will be on the back cover). The front cover winner will receive a free yearbook!

JOGATHON INFORMATION!
EL MARINO PTA JOGATHON FUNDRAISER IS TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 7th!
Thank you so much for supporting El Marino PTA every day!!
El Marino PTA has been planning our biggest fundraiser of the year!! Thanks to all the donations received last year we are working on updating our audiovisual equipment in the auditorium before the end of this year!
Jogathon is El Marino PTA’s largest fundraiser. We will be having this fundraiser during students' respective PE time throughout the day on Tuesday, February 7th. Although this isn't an open event, PTA will provide volunteer opportunities (look for this volunteer signup next week).
In addition to supporting classroom enrichment funds, assemblies, field trips, and much more, the MAIN GOAL of this year’s Jogathon is to update technology in the classrooms to enhance the learning experiences of the students.
You should have received an email from 99 pledges with your student's information about how to donate, pledge and share with family and friends. The general pledges website is jogathon.elmarinopta.org.
Any donation/pledge is welcomed!
Due to the increase in printing costs, Jogathon bifold forms will be available at the school front office only instead of provided in each student's backpack. If you prefer a paper form for Jogathon, these will be provided at the front office in English, Spanish, and Japanese. Please return to the teacher before or on the day of the Jogathon.
All CLASSES to hit 100% participation will win a Bubble Pop (Popsicle and Popcorn) Party and the GRADE level that gets the highest participation overall will win a grade-wide Popcorn Party!!
THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT!
GO DOLPHINS!
If you can't find or don't receive your student(s) 99 pledges information in your email inbox by Monday, Jan. 23rd, or have any general Jogathon questions, please email Sonia Malhotra at sonia@elmarinopta.org or Zoila Moreira at zoila@elmarinopta.org.
CLEARED VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
Although Jogathon is not open to families. PTA is providing volunteer opportunities to help us make it a successful and safe event for the students as well as a great fundraiser.
We will need Cleared Volunteers for this event. Only Cleared Volunteers that have signed up are permitted aside from the Jogathon Committee Team. We have 14 volunteer opportunities available.
Please look at the signup genius link and see if you can volunteer your time:

Thank you in advance!

RECYCLE YOUR OLD SNEAKERS ON FEBRUARY 7th!
According to the U.S. Department of the Interior, Americans throw away at least 300 million pairs of shoes each year. These shoes end up in landfills, where they can take 30 to 40 years to decompose.
There will be a box for collecting sneakers at the front gate, just drop them off between 8:30 am-5pm. They will be sent to "Got Sneakers - a sneaker recycling organization"

APOLOGY AND CORRECTION FOR OSHŌGATSU and LUNAR NEW YEAR
Apology and Correction for Oshōgatsu and Lunar New Year
I want to recognize that I accidentally wrote Lunar New Year and Oshōgatsu as the same cultural traditions. I know personally that these are completely separate traditions but the paragraph I wrote was under the umbrella of Lunar New Year. I should have separated those traditions in that information. I really do apologize for my error. And do please know I didn’t mean any disrespect to either community that celebrates these beautiful traditions.
Oshōgatsu or New Year in Japanese are not to be confused with Lunar New Year. They are completely separate traditions with different meanings and rituals.
If any corrections about any information on the Dolphin Splash Newsletter need to be made, please feel free to contact me, Zoila Moreira, directly at zoila@elmarinopta.org.
Also, if you would like to share information about your cultural traditions and how you celebrate at home or as a family for Dolphin Splash please also reach out to me at the above email as well.
