Mrs. Turley's Tidbits
Week of 11/28 - 12/2
Goodbye November...Hello December!
Fundations:
This week we learned that the letter "e" is the busiest letter of the alphabet! We've added long vowels to our Morning Routine for Baby Echo. We also now know how to "mark" the vowel-consonant-e format in a syllable. We learned the spelling options for /z/ - it could be a "z" OR an "s"!
Literacy:
We prepared for our Nonfiction Unit Assessment by reading a variety of passages, highlighting important information, and answering questions about the text. This reminded students how to go back in the passages to look for answers and highlight the "evidence." We also read passages to practice the skill of compare/contrast and learned about dolphins and porpoises...how they are alike and how they are different.
We have joined the Chicago Blackhawks Reading Program. We share their "One Goal" concept...theirs to win the Stanley Cup...ours to READ, READ, READ! Please make sure to record the number of pages your child reads each night on the Blackhawks Reading Log. Lots of cool prizes can be won each month! Good luck to all of us!
Math:
We worked on our Real World Experience for our Place Value Unit. Students made their own board game with questions such as skip counting, greater than/less than, three addends, and base ten numbers. We even got to play the games with our 5th Grade Buddies on Friday. It was a blast!
Writing Workshop:
We began our information "books." The students have their Table of Contents written and are working through their piece. We are writing an "Introduction" which takes the reader through a short summary of what the text will be about. As they work to the end of the text, the students will write a "Conclusion" which will wrap up the whole project. In between the Table of Contents, Introduction, and Conclusion the students will be writing in-depth about the topic they chose. We hope to also add an "All About the Author" page before they begin their next book.
Junior Achievement:
We had our first two Junior Achievement lessons this week taught by my brother, Tony Petrolis. The students are calling him "Mr. Tony." They've learned about communities, businesses, needs/wants and then production and quality control. They seem to really love the activities and my brother! I especially love when they say he looks SO much older than me! :-)
