Weekly G.R.I.P. Winners

All HRE students know about G.R.I.P. - an acronym which stands for Gratitude Respect Integrity Purpose. Students may earn "GRIP SLIPS" by demonstrating any one of these character traits. Each week, teachers draw one name from their classroom Grip Slips and that student is the Grip Slip winner for the week from that classroom. Those names are then entered into a weekly drawing per grade level; one name is drawn per grade level and those students come to the office to choose a small prize. We are pleased to announce our Grip Slip winners for the week:

Kindergarten: Justin Pisula from Mrs. Fleenor's class was caught showing Purpose.

1st Grade: Hannah Brovold from Mrs. Dankert's class was caught showing Respect.

2nd Grade: Izabela Conway from Mrs. Wilderson's class was caught showing Gratitude.

3rd Grade: Anthony Bilotto from Mrs. Ceglio's class was caught showing Purpose.

4th Grade: Addison Deardorff from Mrs. Mitchell's class was caught showing Purpose.

Attention 3rd & 4th Grade Families

On February 7th, students in grades 3 & 4 will participate in a statewide readiness test to ensure that Pearson's infrastructure, combined with ours, is capable of handling the volume of students participating in the ISTEP test later this month and spring. In order to prep your child's iPad for this assessment, we need your assistance with two tasks:

  1. Update your child’s iPad to the latest operating system: If your child is using an iPad 4th generation (or iPad Retina), please make sure the iPad is at iOS 10.3.3.
*If you are using an iPad Air, iPad Air 2, iPad Pro, or an iPad, please make sure the iPad is at iOS 11.2.5 (the most recent update).

  2. Install testing app: Also, please go to the app store and download the free Pearson TestNav app. The app can be found here:

Pearson will be blocking any iPad that is not on iOS 10.3.3 or iOS 11.2.5 to run the Pearson TestNav app due to security reasons.

For more information on how to update an iPad wirelessly or hardwired via iTunes (popular choice if the iPad is low on space) please see the following link:

Should you need any assistance, please feel free to reach out to your child’s school and ask to be connected to the Building Technician.

Be Prepared for School Closings and Weather Delays This Winter

If weather dictates a 2 hour delay, parents will be notified via a Skylert message (parents set up how they wish to be notified in their Skyward account). In addition, the HSE district will use social media (Facebook, Twitter) and all local TV stations will broadcast delays as well as post them on their websites. If we have a delay, all morning activities will be cancelled unless a staff member personally notifies you otherwise. HSE bus transportation will operate but will occur 2 hours later for morning pickup. No breakfast will be served.

The doors to the school will be locked so please do not drop off your children and drive away!! Students will be admitted into the building at 10:45 AM. School will begin at 10:55 AM. No lunch visitors will be allowed on delay days due to an altered schedule.

In cases of extreme weather conditions, the Superintendent of HSE Schools will call a weather day and close all HSE schools. Again, parents will be notified via Skylert and closings will be announced on social media and by local TV stations.

Remember that HSE bus service will run on all school days. We encourage you to have your child ride the provided bus transportation to school so as not to be late -- tardiness due to weather is not excused. If your child attends the Y before/after care, the Y will be open as usual on delay days but will be closed on cancellation days.

Outdoor Recess Happens Year-Round! Remember - please dress your child for the weather

Recess will be held outdoors whenever possible. Precipitation, sunshine, cloud cover, wind chill, temperature, etc. are all considered when a decision is made for indoor recess. In general, recess will be held indoors when it is raining or the temperature/wind chill falls below 15 degrees Fahrenheit. Conversely, if the temperature is at or above 95 degrees Fahrenheit or the humidity is at or above 95%, teachers will use extreme caution while monitoring students at recess. In addition, students will be provided ample amounts of water before and during recess; Recesses will be kept to 10-20 minutes or may be moved indoors at the discretion of the principal or designee; Children will be watched/monitored carefully for necessary action. These temperatures are based on recommendations from the American Academy of Pediatrics. ~From the HSE District Elementary School Handbook.

Volunteers & Lunch Visitors Reminder

Per HSE Policy, visitors must have their SafeVisitor Badge scanned to check-in to the building. Please download the SafeVisitor App (it is available in Google Play or via the app store on the iPhone) or have your badge available when you come into the school. Looking up names can lead to the wrong person being signed in.

Upon leaving, please give your printed badge to the office staff for quick check-out.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Vicki Foutty at 317-594-4100.
