Cheongna Dalton High School's Weekly Newsletter
November 1st, 2019
From the Assistant Director
It is hard to believe it's already November!
This week our Student Council put on its first major event of the year - the Halloween party! A huge undertaking for any group, this year's party was exceptional in large part due to the Student Council's efforts. I saw a lot of genuine smiles and laughter (even tears because the haunted house was so good!) which was a great change of pace from the focus and stress I see so often from our student body. Hyun Jun Cho and Yunseo Park, our student council President and Vice President, are off to a great start. Thank you to everyone who had a hand in making the event a success (especially our parent and teacher volunteers!).
Next week we will start our second athletic season with both Basketball & Cheerleading teams holding tryouts. We will be joined by the American Drama Group Europe who will perform Romeo & Juliet for our students during Student Organization Time on November 6th. On November 8th we will hold our first pep rally of the year. Grace Cho has been working with the PE department and the athletic council to make this a really inspiring and engaging event!
Parents of students taking the AP exams should ensure they have paid the invoice for their exams by midnight on Monday November 4th or their tests will be canceled. More information about this can be found on the high school webpage.
I hope everyone has a restful weekend!
All the best,
Mr. Jason Musselman

Excellence in Algebra
Cruisin' in Calculus & Geometry Greatness
“This week skill revision looked a little different in Math class. During Calculus lessons, students went on a scavenger hunt in and around the classroom for Zombie Derivative cards in order to solve problems based on Chapter 2 concepts. Geometry students were able to get creative by solving parallel and perpendicular problems to successfully complete a colorful Halloween activity.
Keep up the great work kids!” – Ms. Joy Mc Bryne
Diving Into The Text
"Students in grade 9 English have been working hard in term two as they focus on reading Lord of the Flies, a classic novel. They are doing a fantastic job as they work together to comprehend the plot, characters, themes, and vocabulary. As depicted, the grade 9 students love to read, but some are camera shy!
On Halloween, grade 9 students Suin Lee and Minseong Park also dressed up in fantastic costumes since they planned on attending the Halloween party after classes.
Having completed research papers in term one, students in grade 12 English are honing their public speaking skills in term two since they are already preparing for their senior project presentations next year. Activities this year will include improvisation skills, story-telling skills, and debate skills.
Nana Kang and Hyeok Jin Chun attended class in costume and showed their Halloween spirit, and it looks like both Hyeok Jin and Minseong are fans of the Joker. It appears that quite a few students have seen the recent Joker movie starring Joaquin Phoenix." - Ms. Katharine Galic
Everyday Economics
"AP Economic students have been learning about Production, Costs, and Perfect Competition. The students were working on learning one of the main key concepts for this unit, The Law of Diminishing Marginal Returns through the use of a simulation where students were to create chains made from paper. Each round they would hire an additional worker and keep track of their results. They eventually started to noticed that the additional output produced by each additional worker eventually fell. Putting it in simple terms they eventually had to many cooks in the kitchen!" - Mr. Jacob Spangler

CDS Volleyball Games
Dear Phoenix Fans!!
Friday, November 1st & Saturday, November 2nd our boys and girls volleyball teams will be competing in their final tournaments of the season. Our boys will be traveling to Osan to compete in the KAIAC Boys Plate and our girls team will be at our very own CDS, where will be hosting the KAIAC Girls Cup.
We would like to invite you all to come on out to CDS to help cheer on the girl's team. Unfortunately, spectators won't be allowed to travel to Osan to cheer on the boys as it will take place on the military base, but we will be providing a live stream of the game in our 2nd floor Phoenix Cafe on both days, so feel free to come cheer them on together with us there.
Gooooo Phoenix!!
Finally! The CDS Book Fair Is Here!
Our English teachers have been doing an excellent job this year of giving students an opportunity to read in class. There has been so much research into the benefits of reading on development - we hope our students can find something they love at this years Book Fair!
ADGE Coming To CDS
Last year they performed Macbeth, which was a perfect introduction for our 10th graders as they neared their work with the same play in Term 3, and it brought back memories for all of the 11th and 12th graders who had learned about the play and performed their own adaptations over the years.
Next week, after lunch on November 6th, the ADGE performers bring their production of Romeo and Juliet to the CDS stage. It will be a full-length production, including an intermission. All middle and high school students will be in attendance. Just as our high school students have a special connection to Macbeth, those who were here in 8th grade have a connection to Romeo and Juliet. And for everyone in attendance it will be a great opportunity to experience a timeless classic brought to life by a wonderful group of performers.
We have a very unusual situation this year. Because of some difficulty getting the right kind of visas to allow the performers to work in Korea in time for their performance here at CDS, they had a choice to make: they could either cancel the show at CDS and at several other schools and venues, or they could perform for free.
Rather than disappoint their audiences, they chose to travel all the way here from Europe and perform completely free, paying for their own travel expenses while they are here.
This is amazing, and we are truly grateful for this stunning demonstration of commitment and passion for their work.
