WE TEACH & MODEL CHARACTER EDUCATION AT CMS
Character Education for January is Perseverance and Courage
Perseverance is defined as a continued effort to accomplish a goal despite obstacles, difficulties, or failures. Courage is defined as the ability to overcome obstacles to accomplish a goal despite the risk. At some point everyone has struggled and failed, but it was courage and perseverance that prevailed in overcoming fear, challenges, and setbacks toward the overall success (learning to walk, read, or ride a bike).
Continue to help your teen deal with challenges, failures, and setbacks. Help them develop the ability to persevere and accomplish their goals in the future. It will help build their ability to graduate high school, apply for multiple scholarships, and/or keep a job.
Ways to encourage perseverance and courage:
1. Take the time to share moments when they, you, or other family members have struggled and persevered.
2. Discuss obstacles that were overcome from having the courage to follow what is right “be different” rather than “following the crowd”.
3. Listen to how obstacles felt and encourage them to not give up.
4. Discuss solutions, alternatives, and suggestions to conquer setbacks.
5. Communicate through words and demonstrate through actions resilience, perseverance, and courage “Be an example to follow!"
“History has demonstrated that the most notable winners usually encountered heartbreaking obstacles before they triumphed. They won because they refused to become discouraged by their defeats.” B. C. Forbes
