Milwaukee Road 261 shop

Saturday, May 11th 2013 at 9am

401 Harrison Street Northeast

Minneapolis, MN

All aboard!! This is where the journey begins. Boarding starts at 8:00 am. While waiting to board, enjoy watching modern day freight and passenger trains as they roll past the shop. Take a peek into the cab of the locomotive, feel the heat from the firebox, and smell the smoke as it blows from the stack. You can also sign up to win awards at the Jackson Street Roundhouse when the train returns the next day. One of the reasons why this place is important to me is because I've gone to this shop several times and this is where I met the engineer of the 261-Steve Sandberg. When the conductor calls out "All Aboard!" and the whistle blows twice you're off to Duluth!!!!

The ride to Duluth will take you through the farmlands and north woods of Minnesota and Wisconsin. A breathtaking view of Lake Superior greets you as you arrive at the Lake Superior Railroad Museum at 12:00 pm. This is the perfect time to explore the museum and view old vintage locomotives, cars, and equipment that were used in the Twin Ports area during the transfer era from steam to diesel locomotives. The museum houses the Duluth Missabe and Iron Range Yellowstone steam locomotive #227-one of the largest steam locomotives built in the world. Everyone is welcome to sit in the cab and imagine what it was like to have their hands on the throttle. In addition to the museum, make time to visit the many other interesting sites around the city . In the evening take a ride on a dinner train behind Soo Line steam locomotive #2719. The train will depart from the museum at 5:00 pm and it will travel on the North Shore Scenic Railroad along the shores of Lake Superior. Dine as you watch the sun set over the lake. The train will be back at the museum at 8:00 pm. At 10:00 pm there will be a night photo session with the 261 and 2719. Be one of a small group who gets to be up close and personal with the crew and trains. It's history come to life! One of the reasons why this place is important to me is because I've been to the museum before and I've taken a ride behind the Soo Line 2719.

Once you get to the museum some of the prizes you might receive are discount prices for future trips, books, and train memorabelia. While at the museum take a look at some of the vintage pieces of equipment. One of the reasons why this place is important to me is because I've been going to this museum ever since I was a little kid. Come along and take a ride behind the 261 and relive the steam age!!!!!!
