SBAAC Leadership Conference
About 100 student-athletes attended the SBAAC Leadership Conference held in November at East Clinton High School. Ethan Amstutz, Kenzie Avery, Joe Baughman, Colton Doyle, Emma Muterspaw, and Amanda Wilson were the Clinton-Massie representatives selected to attend. Through the direction of keynote speaker, Ted Wiese, the athletes were divided into teams with kids from other schools. Throughout the day, the teams competed against one another in problem-solving activities with the winners earning keys.
“Each game had a message about leadership and what leadership is. Ted kept adding onto the keys of what it is to be a leader,” said Joe Baughman. Some of keys to leadership were working with others, being open to others’ ideas, taking action, and building people up.

Logan Fisher
A Four Year Dual-Sport Athlete
For all of the future athletes out there who can’t decide between playing two sports in one season, senior Logan Fisher would tell them to do both. He is one of only two dual-sport athletes participating in both soccer and cross country during the fall season all four years of high school. “My advice would be to do it. If you enjoy those sports and are willing to put in the time and effort for both, you will be successful in them,” Fisher said.
When asked about choosing between the two sports, he said he got different things out of each sport. “I’ve always had a love for running,” he said. “Cross country built up my endurance and soccer taught me leadership skills when I was a captain for two years. I also really enjoyed both sports, my teammates and the coaches.”
Fisher said it was sometimes difficult juggling the demands of the sports while maintaining his school work. “Playing two sports at the same time was a good lesson in time management skills. Fortunately, I was able to get good grades, always do my homework, and attend practices.” However, he said giving his total effort for both soccer and cross country was tough sometimes. “Giving 100% commitment to both teams and being physically and mentally prepared to do my best all the time was my biggest challenge,” Fisher said.
Sports haven’t dominated Fisher’s life though. Throughout high school, he has been a part of Student Council, has been a member of the National Honor Society his junior and senior years as well as volunteered at various organizations. Outside of school he enjoys drawing, being outdoors and volunteering.
He said the coaches for both sports, Dean Richardson for cross country and Julio and Logan Madrigal for soccer, have been instrumental in what he’s learned from being involved in both sports. He said they’ve taught him responsibility, leadership skills, work ethic, and being a good teammate on and off the field/course.
Studying architecture in college is in the plans next year for Fisher, although he is still undecided where to attend, but he hopes that soccer and running can still be a part of his college life. “If the college I end up in has a running and soccer club, I would like join those,” he said.
Coming Soon...A New Scoreboard Courtesy of the Boosters
Falcon fans will notice a new scoreboard at Frank Ireland Field next fall. Thanks to the Clinton-Massie Boosters, who are funding the project, the new scoreboard is projected to be installed this spring. The decision was made to make the new purchase when most of the bulbs are requiring replacement. Each bulb is around $350. Additionally, the reliability of the transmitter which operates it has also been failing.
“We hope the new scoreboard will improve the look of the stadium with the functionality of the board. One additional feature included with the purchase will be delay of game clocks in the end zones,” said Athletic Director Cindy Running.
Florea Signs with EIU
Future ceremonial signing dates are January 10, February 7, and May 9. Let Mrs. Running know if you are interested in signing on one of these dates.
Julio and Logan Madrigal: Co-Coaches in Soccer and in Life
When Logan, a Clinton-Massie graduate, moved to Los Angeles after high school, little did she know playing recreational soccer there would lead to love. “While living there,” Logan said, “I met Julio, who I thought was just going to be a trainer for me to enhance my soccer skills. Little did I know the plans God had for us were far more than that. Within weeks, we knew we were going to be together forever.” Now married with two boys, Malachi and Micah, ages 4 and 1, the couple is now expecting their third son, mid-March 2019.
Their backgrounds may have been different, with Logan growing up in Ohio and Julio in Los Angeles, but both have always had a passion for soccer. Julio began playing at age three, Logan at four. Julio’s dad was his soccer coach until he was 12, then he continued playing all four years of high school, into college and then onto the professional level of the MLS (Major League Soccer) for several years.
Although they’ve played on soccer teams together before, coaching the Clinton-Massie boys’ team in 2017 was their first time co-coaching. This year they began coaching the girls’ team as well.
But when it comes to coaching styles, the Madrigals are on the same page. “It’s so much fun because Logan and I have the same goal and mindset when it comes to coaching,” Julio said. “That’s to help as many kids as we can, not just when it comes to soccer, but with life as well. We want the kids to grow up caring for other human beings and have a heart to help people. So I wouldn’t want to carry out this mission with anyone else but my wife.”
