Great Britain
The colony that Great Britain had was Singapore. As steamships started getting popular, they were the major stopping point for traffic going to or from China. The leader of Great Britain was Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles. He once said, "Here is all life and activities." He was so proud of what he made that he didn't think there was any other place like it.
Great Britain wanted Singapore for it's advantageous location. It was surrounded by water and was close to the British's trading partner, China. It would also prevent the dutch from invading the East Indies.
