Social Studies Test Next Week

We will be having our next unit test on Thursday (5/26).

This unit covers the reform movements of the 1800s - including the abolition movement, slavery, and the events that led to the Civil War.

Students have several (pink) note sheets to study: (1) Timeline; (2) Road to Civil War; (3) Important People & Vocabulary; (4) Fighting to End Slavery; (5) Reform Movements of the 1800s.

Students also have a (yellow) vocabulary review packet (which is due today).

Completed copies of class notes are available on my website.

Reminder: Canandaigua is the password for all school webpages.

Approaching the End

It's hard to believe, but the end of the school year is quickly approaching.

Upcoming Important Dates:

Wednesday, June 1 - Orchestra Concert

Friday, June 3 - Field trip money & permission slips due (see more info below)

Wednesday, June 8 - Band & Chorus Concert

Thursday, June 16 - Foreign Language final exams; English exam in class

Friday, June 17 - Science final exam; English exam in class (continued)

Monday, June 20 - Social Studies final exam; field trip (after the exam)

Tuesday, June 21 - Last day for students (early dismissal)

FINAL EXAMS: In most classes, final exams are cumulative (i.e., they include everything that has been covered throughout the school year). For many 7th graders, this might be their first experience with such cumulative exams, and just the thought of knowing so much material might seem a bit overwhelming. However, while there will be a lot of information to know, nearly every class will provide in-class reviews as well as various review materials to help students prepare. As long as students focus during these reviews and put an honest effort into completing the review materials, they should have no reason to worry.

End of Year Field Trip, etc.

After the Social Studies final exam on the morning of Monday, June 20th, 7th grade will have an end-of-school field trip to Kershaw Park in Canandaigua. This trip will include a ride on the Canandaigua Lady, a picnic lunch, as well as the chance to play games, swim in the lake, or just hang out and relax with their friends and teachers.

We are still figuring out the exact cost for students (probably $8), but if you live in the City of Canandaigua, you can reduce the cost by picking up a season pass tag for entry into the beach/swimming area before the date of the field trip. (Note - City of Canandaigua residents can obtain their free pass by presenting proof of residency at Kershaw Park; the beach office opens Memorial Day Weekend).

On the last day of school, Team Cayuga traditionally shares an end-of-7th grade slide show consisting of pictures we have taken throughout the school year. If you have any photos of school-related activities (e.g., school sports, concerts, musical, etc.) that you would like to share, please email them to (I have lots of pictures of mod track and girls mod soccer, but very few of sports that I don't coach).

Don’t forget to check my website for weekly plans, copies of notes, and blank copies of worksheets. Also, don’t forget the book website, which has tons of things to help reinforce skills and practice. Just 10 minutes on the website each day can help. Offer rewards – trade 10 min computer time for 10 minutes on the website.

All classes: Please look HERE for thoughts on how to help your child succeed in Mrs. Olvany's math class.

Is there any homework tonight?

All 7th grade students are expected to have and use their agendas throughout the day. Agendas should be the first source for info about assignments, tests, etc. If your child forgets to bring his/her agenda home, (or if what your child recorded is unclear or illegible), you can also try our "homework hotline". You can also check up on missing assignments and/or grades through our Infinite Campus Student/Parent Portal.

If students have work that has been saved on the school's network, they should be able to access the school network by clicking HERE; NOTE: The password for all school webpages is Canandaigua .

Teacher Webpages

Some teachers have their own classroom websites. You may be able to find more information, links, assignments, etc. by visiting their classroom webpages.

NOTE - the password to visit all school websites is: Canandaigua

Mrs. Olvany is particularly good about keeping her website up-to-date with assignments. Click HERE to visit her webpage.
