Twelve Bridges Middle School

S.T.E.A.M. Mentoring pilot program for 8th grade girls

"Playbook for Teens"

Twelve Bridges Middle School has made the commitment to becoming a S.T.E.A.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics) school beginning next school year (2017-2018). There will be much more information to come about S.T.E.A.M for next school year. "Playbook for Teens" is our launching pad!!!!

To begin this transition, TBMS is hosting "Playbook for Teens" pilot program for 8th grade girls. There were 35 students recommended for the pilot program and 15 of those students were accepted through an application process.

The pilot will have 8 sessions. The girls will learn about women who are succeeding in S.T.E.A.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) careers.

The young ladies participating in this pilot program will learn about women who have chosen, and are succeeding in, STEAM careers. These role models share the "Plays" they followed. They tell about overcoming obstacles, discuss why they love their work, how they are making the work a better place, and they give advice to their teenage "self". The Playbook participants will see there a numerous pathways to succeed in STEAM careers.

The goal of the pilot:
Help the girls make their own decisions about education after high school, make a (flexible) plan, and to take action. The Playbook pilot will surround students with support from peers, parents, mentors, teachers, and future employers.

Why S.T.E.A.M.?
The US Department of Commerce tells us that over the past 10 years, growth in STEAM jobs was three times faster than growth in non-STEAM jobs. And, STEAM degree holders enjoy higher earnings, regardless of whether they work in STEAM or non-STEAM occupations.
