HPS Tech News 2014 (No 11)
25/5/14
Welcome!
Welcome to the third 'HPS Tech News' for 2014. This edition will contain a variety of sites and apps you can explore at your leisure and hopefully find useful in your classroom.
National Sorry Day and National Reconciliation Week
Tomorrow is National Sorry Day leading into National Reconciliation Week. Please visit our school links page with a number of resources that will prove useful with your students this week. Scootle also has a number of resources you could use.
One of the sites I've linked on our resources page is the 'Share Our Pride' website. A fantastic site with lots of information and resources. The ABC's Splash website is also a great resource for National Sorry Day. Please take the time to check these sites out.
Science News
With Stage 2 holding their science day this week, I thought it might be a time to check out/revisit some good science resources. Sites are added regularly to our science links page so please check in every now and then. 31 'Primary Connections' Science Units are now also available free via Scootle. If you don't subscribe to the CSIRO's weekly 'Science By Email', it's well worth it, with lots of information, quizzes and experiments. This is last Friday's edition. Subscribe by emailing sciencemail@csiro.au
Stay Smart Online Awareness Week
It is 'Stay Smart Online Awareness Week' from the 2nd - 6th of June. It gives us the opportunity to revisit with our students how to be a safe and respectful digital citizen. Our school resource page has lots of useful links to use in your classroom. This 'Teaching Ideas' site has some posters you could use as prompts for discussion. The Common Sense Media site is a great site that I have used many times. I have also managed to obtain some free resources from the 'Stay Safe Online' people for our students to take home, and hopefully prompt discussions with mum and dad. These will be shared out, and depending on how many I have, you may receive some surprises in your tray next week!
Here is a simple poster on being a digital citizen (see below) shared on the Global Education Database site.
Australian Curriculum Resources
Thanks heaps Jen for setting up our Australian Curriculum blog to share resources and ideas. Don't forget to subscribe, so you receive an email when something new is posted. Don't be shy to post a response either!
Visit this 'Difference Differently' site that is aligned to the Australian Curriculum and has lots of great resources and ideas. "Explore diversity with this free interactive online resource. Aligned to the Australian Curriculum, Difference Differently offers modules in English, History, Geography and Civics & Citizenship for students in Years 3 to 10." I've popped it on our AC links page.
Another great site 'Geckos - Welcome to Growing Enriched Cultural Knowledge in Our Schools'. I've also popped it on our AC links page.
iPad News
Check out our iPad resource page for some recently added sites. This Teach Thought site has a visual library of worthwhile apps. The Explain Everything app is always featured as a really useful app with many applications. Listen to KF talking about their special place at home with their voices and pictures recorded and published with this app. (Shared via iMovie and Vimeo).

Lesson Zone
Lesson Zone looks like a good resource site with eBooks and printables available. I've signed up for it. Note, it is not free; there is a subscription fee involved to access the resources.
A Bit Of Fun To Finish Off . . .
