NO SCHOOL 10/26 and 10/27, Student Holiday
Two days makes a huge difference.
Missing just two days of school each month can impact your child in long-lasting ways. This isn’t just true for high school students. This is true even for kindergarten students.
According to research, kindergarten students who miss just two days of school per month:
Scored 20% lower in reading and math in later grades
Are twice as likely to be held back in a grade
Are twice as likely to be suspended by the end of 7th grade, and
Are very likely to continue being chronically absent.
The impact of missing school gets bigger as children grow older. By 6th grade, being absent just twice a month over a year places the student at high risk of academic failure and dropping out.
Missing school matters, and in Lockhart, we have an attendance problem. Our students are missing school beyond the normal expected absences of childhood illness, and it is hurting their ability to learn and achieve in school.
Lockhart ISD has set an attendance goal of 97% this year, and we are asking for your help. We are asking for your commitment to make sure your child attends school on time every day, except in those cases when your child is truly ill or must be out for a medical appointment.
We have high expectations of our students because we know high achievement cannot happen without those high expectations. When students are chronically absent, just two days a month, they cannot achieve.
Not only are we preparing them academically, we are preparing them for the skills they need in the real world, such as regular attendance at a job. Setting good habits now helps children succeed later in life.
Click here to read about tips for parents about avoiding chronic absenteeism. If you have any concerns or barriers to regular school attendance for your child, please reach out to your child’s campus counselor for help.
As always, feel free to email me at Susan.Bohn@lockhart.txed.net if I can be of any assistance.
Thank you for your help and partnership in supporting your child’s academic success.
Truly,
Susan K. Bohn

Verdaderamente,
Susan K. Bohn
