Brentwood Elementary Mission Statement

Expectation of Excellence

A Letter from the Principal...

Dear Brentwood Families,

Happy Fall! This year you have likely heard us talking about having a “growth mindset,” and your child may have even begun using some of this language in describing what he/she has done in our classrooms. As we have an opportunity at conference time to discuss each child’s strength areas and areas that are opportunities to grow, it seems like the perfect time for sharing some information on what having a growth mindset is all about.

While intelligence was long thought to be a fixed trait, more recent research shows that our brains continue to grow and develop with the effort we expend, ultimately even allowing for greater intelligence. This is great news for all of us, and certainly for students! So, how do we help our kids take advantage of this? In the next few newsletters you will find resources that will both help you understand the philosophy behind teaching students to have a growth mindset and how we can better help them embrace this important idea.

I will be sharing items, with permission from, in the newsletter. However there are many more resources you could find if you’re looking for more information. Another source with good information for parents is It’s my hope that you’ll partner with us in helping teach your child to learn to see mistakes as opportunities to learn and successes as a result of effort. We want our students to understand that they can “grow their brains” by doing hard things.

Please consider adding some of this language to your daily conversations with your child, praising effort and meeting goals set. Modeling and sharing your expectations is of paramount importance, as you have the most influence on your child.

Thanks for taking the time to check out what we’re up to at Brentwood and for helping all of our students GROW THEIR BRAINS!

Mrs. Nicole Walker

3rd Grade Travels Back in Time for Field Trip

Have you visited Conner Prairie?

Our third grade classrooms recently took a field trip to Conner Prairie. Visiting Conner Prairie allows young learners to explore history. It also immerses them in rich experiences that include science, technology, engineering and math - different strands that work together to create a stronger, more meaningful whole. There are countless opportunities to express creativity and experience the formative power of the arts at Conner Prairie.

Enjoy the pictures of our students as they stepped into the 19th Century.

Every Month a New Box Top Winning Class Will Be Announced!!!

Don't forget to send your Box Tops into your child's teacher! August's Box Top winner was Mrs. Gray's homeroom class. They won a pajama day. Watch for the September winner to be announced soon!

Body Safety Program for Elementary Students

We are happy to announce that Plainfield Community Elementary School District will be partnering this year with Susie’s Place, a child advocacy organization in Hendricks County, to bring Body Boundaries: A Body Safety Program for Children to our students in KDG, 2nd, and 4th grades. Body Boundaries is a child sexual abuse prevention and education program that empowers your child to say “NO!” to any unwanted touches that make them uncomfortable from anyone.

We invite you to attend a Susie’s Place Parent Night to learn more about the Body Boundaries program at Van Buren Elementary School in the cafeteria on Tuesday, November 14th from 6:30pm – 7:30pm. This meeting is open to all parents and/or guardians of Kindergarten, 2nd and 4th grade students. Please be advised that Parent Night is not open to children.

Has Your Address Changed?

Have you moved recently? If your child rides the bus, we want to make sure your child is picked up on schedule and dropped off safely to your home. If you have changed addresses since you did the online registration in PowerSchool, we will need to have you fill out a transportation form so we can pass the information to the transportation department so your child's bus route can be updated.

You can find this form on our website. From the main page, click MENU, and then DOCUMENTS. Please return this form to the main office as soon as you can, so the appropriate changes can be made. Call us if you have any questions!

Update Information in Parent Portal

Parents are now able to do Year Round Updates in PowerSchool with the new Online Registration, now that “Returning Registration” has closed.

The type of updates the parents can do are:

  • Emergency Contact changes
  • Phone changes
  • Email addresses

The types of updates Parents cannot do:

  • Student address changes
  • Parent names changes

(Contact the office for these types of changes)

Note: Parent changes must be done from a web browser, and not the PowerSchool app,

Simply sign into your parent power school account, and click on the “Year Round Update” link (see below) to update data in real time.

Become a Brentwood Volunteer

Would you like to help out in your child's classroom, go on field trips, or attend field trips? If so - our teachers can't wait to have you help out! But before you do there are some simple steps you need to complete first...

1. Every volunteer, field trip chaperone, or classroom party volunteer must have a background check completed through PCSC. Many of your completed these forms when you enrolled your children online this year as the forms were included. If you still need to fill one out for this year please contact the office well in advance of your first visit to do this.

2. Every volunteer must also complete a PCSC Confidentiality Volunteer Agreement in the office upon their first time volunteering each year.

3. Every visitor to our building during school hours must check-in at the reception desk and be entered into our Safe Visitor system. The very fist time you visit you must have your Driver's License or State Issued ID Card which will be scanned into the computer. Most likely you will NOT need it again upon subsequent visits because the system stores your information. (However, should a glich appear in the system and it is required of you it would be more convenient on you if you had your ID with you.) Every visitor is photographed at the same time they are checked in upon their first visit also.

Thank you for your flexibility as we continue to learn this software during our second year of its use. We know your first priority, as ours in the office, is the safety of all of our children.

(Lunch Room visitors will sit at a specially designated table with only their child and therefore will only be checked into our Safe Visitor system (#3) above.) They are not required to complete steps 1-2 above unless they want to volunteer in a classroom or small group setting, chaperone a field trip, or help out at PTO run classroom parties or events.)
