December's PAWS-itive Character Trait Is...


The PAWS-ITIVE Character Trait for the month of December is CARING. Caring people are polite, considerate, generous, affectionate, patient, understanding, loving, and forgiving.

Principal for a Day

Students with more than 75 Tiger Points were put into a drawing to be Principal for the Day. This month's winner is Brayden from Grade 6! Before Christmas break, Brayden will spend a day as the Principal of the Day! He will get to read the morning announcements, carry a radio, wear a name badge, visit with classes and sit in on meetings and shadow me for the rest of the day. I hope that the experience will prompt one of my assistants to choose education as a career.

2021-2022 PBiS Goal

Did you know that as of December 14, 2021 93% of our students have one or fewer behavior referrals? 414 out of our 444 students have received one or fewer behavior referrals for discipline thanks to our school-wide support and commitment to PBiS (Positive Behavior Intervention & Supports)! Our students are making great choices and learning quickly to avoid repeating bad ones!

Our overall goal is to have 82% or more of our kids receive one or fewer minor/major behavior referrals this school year. We are on track to meet that ambitious and worthwhile goal!

A December to Remember!

December 16 - "Tree Topper!" Wear a holiday hat, headband or tree topper!

December 17 - "Shine Bright Like a Diamond!" Light up your outfit with holiday lights, tinsel, light up necklaces, etc.!

December 20 - "Festive Sweater Day!" Find that perfectly festive sweater/sweatshirt to wear!

December 21 - "Christmas Vacation!" Wear a Hawaiian shirt, sunglasses, etc.!

December 22 - "'Twas the Day Before Christmas Break!" Wear your PJ's to school!

Health & Safety Plan Update

On Friday, December 10, 2021, the Pennsylvania Supreme Court struck down the Acting Secretary of Health’s school masking order effective December 10, 2021.

Accordingly, the District will now default back to the Health and Safety plan approved in August of 2021 by the Board of School Directors. The current language regarding mask wearing states that face coverings are no longer required; however, any student or employee who prefers to wear a face covering will be permitted to do so.

At this time the District HIGHLY recommends and encourages everyone to continue to wear a face covering in all school buildings regardless of vaccination status.

Please note that this decision does not impact the federal directive requiring all passengers and drivers to wear a mask on school buses, including on buses operated by public and private school systems; these requirements remain in effect.


Hour of Code

A HUGE SHOUT OUT to Mrs. Shaffer, Mrs. Longo, Mrs. Doubet, Mrs. Carey, Mrs. Sansom and Mr. Biernacki who participated in Hour of Code this week! It's never too early to learn how to code!

The 'Hour of Code' is a worldwide initiative sponsored by Computer Science Education Week and Code.org to introduce millions of students to one hour of computer science and computer programming. Participating in the Hour of Code means doing a one hour computer science activityThe Hour of Code started as a one-hour introduction to computer science, designed to demystify "code", to show that anybody can learn the basics, and to broaden participation in the field of computer science.

6th Grade CCCTC Visit

MES 6th graders visited the Crawford County Career & Technical Center on Monday, December 13 to tour the different shops and ask questions about the programs that could be available to them in a few short years. There are many promising trades and careers available for students to engage in at the CCCTC!

Super Readers Assemble!

Super Readers Assemble! On December 3, Ms. McPherson's Super Readers put on their capes and swung into the Pre-K room to wow those kids with their newly acquired superpowers! They sounded AMAZING! These Pre-K kids can't wait to become Super Readers in Kindergarten now!



New and Exciting in Kindergarten, we have become "SUPER" readers! We are using superpowers to make our books come to life. We are noticing "secret" codes (punctuation). In writing, we are strengthening our oral story telling skills in preparation for writing true stories. Our snap word list is continuing to grow and gaining stronger ear muscles to hear ending sounds in words. In math, we will be expanding our number sense with numbers 11-20 by counting, recognizing, grouping, and writing them. In science/health, we are exploring the winter seasonal changes with clothing, weather, and animals. With our second step lessons, we are learning to solve our own problems with the "problem solving steps"...S-T-E-P.

Grade 1

In Reading, students are studying words closely and learning important strategies to solve unfamiliar words while reading. They are learning how to break apart words into parts and blend them back together.

For phonics, students are learning about words with the "silent e", vowel teams, contractions, and compound words. In math, students are continuing to build strategies for addition and subtraction using a number line, while using other various strategies. For writing, students are finishing up their "How To" Books and practicing writing to prompts. Our Christmas party is Wednesday, December 22nd. If parents have any questions or did not receive the party newsletter, please contact the teacher for info.

Grade 2

Second grade is currently working on two-digit addition in math and will start two-digit subtraction in January. In writing, we are wrapping up opinion writing and are moving into nonfiction writing after the holiday break. We are finishing up our unit in reading on growing as second-grade readers with fiction books. In our next unit, the students are becoming experts with nonfiction reading. We are finishing up our current unit in phonics with rhyming and our next unit is working on tackling multisyllabic words. We wish everyone a safe and relaxing holiday break!

Grade 3

Third grade has been busy working on many things. In Reading we are doing a novel study of the book, The One and Only Ivan, to wrap up the current unit we are working on. In Writing we are finishing up Persuasive Writing by writing persuasive letters to someone asking him/her for a special gift. During Math, the kids are continuing to learn many different strategies on how to solve multiplication problems. We will be moving onto to division and seeing how multiplication and division are related. We practice our word study every day by applying the skills we learn into our daily writing. This is the best way to see if we really understand skills we have been taught. In Second Step we finished the unit on empathy and our currently learning about ways to calm down when our thinking brain may get taken over by our lizard brain. Second Step really has taught the kids many different skills on how to handle situations that they may encounter in their daily lives.

Grade 4

In writing, students are working to complete their personal persuasive and persuade an audience to feel strongly about a topic. They are working to use authoritative language, provide evidence, and incorporate counterclaims in their arguments. Next up...literary essay!

In reading, students are finishing their unit on nonfiction. They are learning to read various types of nonfiction texts, think critically across two texts, evaluate sources, read closely, and think deeply about their reading. As nonfiction readers, we are making a commitment to learn as we read.

In Science Grade 4 is learning about Nonrenewable and Renewable Resources. At the current rate of consumption coal could run out in about 100 years and petroleum could run out in about 50 years. Students are learning that as a country, the United States will have a leading role in developing and building an infrastructure for using renewable resources such as solar, wind, geothermal, and hydro power. Students are also being informed about the worldwide conflict and problems associated with the usage of all energy sources. They know that they will be a large part of the solutions in the future.

In Math, the 4th grade students have begun their unit on division. Because this is a difficult skill, we will be spending a lot of time over the next few weeks practicing the procedure and then using multiplication to check their answer. We will also be applying this skill to solving story problems and finding the signal words that let us know that we need to divide in order to find the answer.

Grade 5

In reading, 5th grade is in the Fantasy genre. Our read-aloud book is The Thief of Always. We will continue with Fantasy and book clubs after the holiday break. In math we will be finishing up decimals before the holidays and starting fractions when we come back in 2022. In writing, we have been working on Literary Essays and Opinion Writing. We will be looking at some poetry couplets and some creative writing before the break. We will start the new year with Research Based Argument Essays. In science, students have been learning about Earth’s water: the water cycle, freshwater and ocean water. We will enjoy a water/ice activity before Christmas break. In Social Studies, we will read and learn about colony life to prepare us for the American Revolution study in the new year.

Grade 6

In reading and writing, students will continue to work through the “Animal Allies” unit, reading about how animals and people form special bonds and can learn from one another. As they work through the unit, goals include reading, evaluating, and writing nonfiction narratives, understanding and developing grammar usage, and vocabulary development. In social studies students will soon be testing on Chapter 11: Industry and Immigration, and then moving onto Chapter 12: Struggle for Reform. Learning objectives include placing key events of the struggles for workers’ rights, African Americans’ rights, and women’s rights in context with one another, as well as analyzing maps and timelines to make meaning. We will also take some virtual field trips of the Statue of Liberty and The Tenement Museum using Google Arts and Culture expeditions. In Math we will be working on Algebraic concepts. Students will be writing and evaluating numerical and algebraic expressions. They will use Order of Operations and Distributive Property to evaluate the expressions. In Science, the 6th grade continued to work on the relationships between energy and forces. The students then designed working roller coasters with a Christmas theme. The goal was to successfully deliver Santa's presents to the bottom of the roller coaster! The 6th grade classes also participated in The Hour of Code week. They learned about Artificial Intelligence (A.I.) and wrote code to create their own simulations and 3D games.
