A growing national spirit kept the country together by Andrew Jackson- a self made man from the growing west who was both confident and dynamic.

Workers who previously could clean only one pound of cotton by hand per day now clean as much as fifty pounds per day. The cotton gin was a very useful tool.

Manifest Destiny is a big part for industrialization because its the point where settlers move from the east to the west for expanison.

Americans thought of their country as a melting pot, a mixture of people of different cultures and races. As immigration increased, strong anti-immigration feelings emerged.

Sentiment housing was being put in cities for the immigrates to live.

During the 1870's almost all the immigrants came from Europe crossing either the Atlantic Ocean or Pacific Ocean.


New York City organized the first full-time,salaried police force. Police force to stop the political crimes.

Technological boom in the 19th century contributed to the growing industrial strength of the U.S.

Americanization movement was designed to assimilate people of wide-ranging cultures.


As the numbered of child workers rose dramatically reformers worked to protect workers and to end child labor. Businesses hired children cause they performed unskilled jobs for lower wages.

As moral reformers sought to change individual behavior, a severe economic panic in 1893 promoted some Americans to question the capitalists economic system.

Prohibition was a big thing during the progressive movement by one such thing as alcholic beverages.


Americans had always sought to expand the size f their nation, and throughout the 19th century they extended their control toward the Pacific Ocean.

Advances in technology enabled American farms and factories to produce far more than American citizens could consume.

Cultural factors also were used to justify imperialism. Some Americans combined the philosophy of Social Darwinism and Anglo-Saxons.

World War I

Under the Treaty of Versailles, Germany was required to make significant territorial concessions. These were primarily along its eastern and western borders.

The heavy reparations, combined with the devastated economic infastructure throughout Germany and political tension under the Weimer Republic, led to a economic depression.

Generally the war brought an increase in progressive thinking. In many parts of the world, opportunities for lower and middle class people improved, while members of the aristrocracy sometimes found their power waning.
