Illinois Science Assessment

Students in 5th and 8th grade who attend school in-person will begin taking the state-required Illinois Science Assessment this week. Students will be able to take the assessments during their respective Science classes so our schedule should not be interrupted. Students who attend school remotely will take the assessments next week when they are scheduled to return to the building to take part in the math and reading portions of the Illinois Assessment for Readiness.

Summer School

Like all schools, Taft has and will be receiving funding from the federal government that must be used to provide students with digital devices to help provide access to learning outside of the school building, purchase PPE supplies to help mitigate the spread of COVID, enhance cleaning of the building to ensure a safe school environment, and to combat the loss of learning. In an effort to help combat the loss of learning that our students have experienced over the past year due to the COVID pandemic, Taft will hold a summer school program.

Space in the summer school program will be limited and a priority will be placed on students who will be invited to the program due to their specific learning needs. Over the next 10 days, our staff will identify students who we believe will benefit and send out invitations to those students. We will have some limited space for students who do not get invited as well. While we are placing a priority for the students we feel will most benefit from this program we also know that all of our students have experienced some learning loss, so we will make every attempt to accommodate every student who is interested in the additional learning a summer school program will offer. We will also be sending out a sign-up form to students we are not inviting, and we will begin a waitlist for those students. As we begin to understand how many students from the waitlist we will be able to accommodate, we will start accepting those students based on a first come first serve basis.

The summer school program will meet from 8:30 AM - Noon on the dates listed below. Due to the limited space, we are asking that all students who sign-up commit to all of the dates listed to ensure that our summer school program has the biggest impact on the most students possible.

Week 1 - June 1 - June 3

Week 2 - June 7 - June 10

Week 3 - June 14 - June 17

Week 4 - June 21 - June 24

Please be on the lookout for more information coming home soon. Aside from our staff sending home the various sign-up forms we will also make sure to send out more communications via email and text messages.

Old Towels Needed

As part of the upcoming Teacher's Appreciation Week, the leadership in our Student Council and BETA Club is interested in showing our staff their appreciation by washing the cars after dismissal. As part of that plan, they are in need of towels to dry the cars off. If you have any spare towels please send them to school with your students. If it is easier we can also stop by to pick them up. Please call us to let us know.
