Mrs. Poliszczuk's First Grade Class
weekly update
April 7, 2017
Spring break is here! I hope everyone has a wonderful, relaxing break.
In phonics, students practiced reading and writing words with the /ow/ sound as in cow, spelled ou and ow.
We are still working in Unit 5 in reading. After reading the Joy of a Ship and Building Bridges, students identified the topic and used the text and text features to retell key details in the story.
In math, we began unit 8, Addition, Subtraction and the Number System. In this unit, students will count and write numbers to 120. Students will also work on achieving fluency with the two-addend combinations of ten, students will write equivalent number sentences, and play games that highlight the importance of ten in our Base-10 number system. This week, students counted by 2's and 4's to solve problems.
A busy, fun filled week!
On Monday, we were able to see a performance of the Lion King, Jr. I was in awe. The hard work of the students and staff was evident. We have such talented students!
On Tuesday, we visited Oregon Ridge Nature Center. Students learned about the habitats of the animals who make their home there. Students also explored trails and observed the forest, wetlands and meadows within the park.
On Wednesday, we visited the Maker Lab with Mrs. Franklin's class. The students used a variety of materials to build a habitat for their Peep.
On Thursday we had our spring party and egg hunt. Although it was pouring outside, it did not dampen our mood. Students had a blast hunting for eggs in our classroom and completing an adorable bunny flower pot craft. A big thank you to everyone who donated items/food or your time to make it an enjoyable time for the students.
Finally, today we had an assembly to teach students about the 3 R's: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and how important they are in saving our environment. Students learned which items should and should not be recycled in order to help recycle at home.
