January 2016
Happy January and Happy New Year! We had a wonderful holiday party before we left for break. A big thank you to Mrs. Kozloff, our wonderful homeroom mom, and to our other moms and dads who either helped here in the classroom or sent in goodies!
Reading
Writing
In writing, students finished their opinion pieces about a topic of their choice. We have also been working with literary devices in our writing. Students created snow globes using a different type of figurative language in each of the snow globe panels. Students will also write an informative piece later in the month after they research their topic for their inquiry project.
Math
In math, we began unit five. This unit focuses on skills such as place value, reading, writing and ordering numbers, tenths and hundredths. We continue to practice selecting appropriate strategies when solving a problem and explaining our thinking. Students also continue to use the xtramath program to practice their facts here in the classroom.
Science and Social Studies
We completed our motion unit and assessment before we left for break. Assessments will be coming home in the near future for your review. We began creating a travel brochure in social studies and will continue to work on it for the remainder of the week. Our next social studies unit will focus on immigration.
Enjoy your week!
