Summer School
Student Council
Peanut Butter & Jelly Challenge
The PB&J challenge begins next week, on February 3 and goes through February 26. Bring Peanut butter and jelly jars. Student Council is asking that teachers keep a count of the number of items their homeroom class donates. Glass jars are not accepted by Feeding America. Please only donate plastic jars. If we, as a school, collect at least 350 items, the class with the most items per student will get a treat.
Project Linus
Don’t forget about Project Linus. On Wednesday, March 11th we’ll meet in the library from 2:30pm to 3:45pm to tie blankets that will be donated to Children’s Hospital. Donated 1 ½ yard fleece pieces are needed and highly appreciated to make our project a success. We need 2 pieces to make one blanket. Please consider donating some fleece and joining us for blanket making in March. PS March 11th will be PJ Day in honor of Project Linus.
NEW DIGITAL PROCEDURE for Box Tops Credits
In the past, Box Tops for Education has given the school monies for sending in the BTE certificates from participating products. For now, we can continue to earn money that way, but the BTE company is switching over to a digital format. On newer product packaging and wrappers you will begin to see a picture like the one below.
If you buy any eligible BTE products, your receipt can be scanned into the BTE app to automatically earn credit. The app is free and can be downloaded quickly. Be sure to choose Stone Bank School as your beneficiary of funds. For a limited time, we are able to earn double credit (digital and certificate turn in) on some products. The day you first download the app and sign up, you may submit receipts from the last 6 months. Normally participants are allowed two weeks to upload receipts. Here is a video to help you get started.

Please remember that you should be signed up for 14-16 credits for the school year. Please print a copy of your final choices to share with Mrs. Zdrojewski, she will be able to double check for accuracy that way. Remember there is no submit button. Vex Robotics Competition
Stone Bank School in High Spirits after Vex Robotics Competition
Stone Bank raises to quarter finals amongst the steep competition of 54 Wisconsin High School and Middle School Teams
Stone Bank School Robotics Club fought their way to the quarter finals at the 7th Annual Ishamon Harris Memorial VRC Tournament. Students in grades 6-8 planned, built, and programmed two competitive robots landing Team 59619A, “Mr. Phoenix”, in the quarter- finals. It was an exciting day as these first time competitors steadily inched their ranking scoring cubes in safety zones and winning matches in this year’s VRC game, Tower Takeover.
These teams may have looked cool under pressure, but Henry Newman, one of the drivers for 59619A confessed, “My legs were shaking the whole time during the first match. I have never done a-n-y-t-h-i-n-g like this.” Not only did the teams shake off these nervous jitters, but Stone Bank’s Team 59619B lost their entire claw system when it was bumped by a competitor’s robot. Finn Myers, 7th grade team captain, stepped back to analyze the situation. He didn’t get emotional. Instead, he turned to his team. The team made a few quick adjustments and jumped into their next match. Likewise, sixth grade student, Harlan Danes, programmed an autonomous code for 59619A on the fly to give the team the cutting edge needed to progress.
Stone Bank was awarded the DPI Robotics League Participation grant, which has helped the team match start-up costs. The grant matches funds dollar to dollar up to $5000. Students have been extraordinarily motivated and engaged in the fundraising. The students coordinated a school-wide Aquabot fundraiser and raised $400 in just three days. They have also asked the greater community for donations to help reach their $5000 goal. Their letters and pleas helped raise an additional $1,600 from individual and community partners. The team is still seeking sponsors to reach their $5000 eligibility of matched funds through the grant. Their goal is to purchase two V5 Robotic Kits for the 2020-2021 competition season. Parent and team supporter, Jason Gaul, expressed an awe for the opportunity his son has at Stone Bank, “I wish we would have had something like this when we were kids!” Teams meet weekly throughout the entire year and will begin preparing for next year’s competition in April.
Volunteers Needed
Needed: Adult Volunteers/Mentors
Fluid Power is a 6-8 week program February 7 - March 13th. Students meet during the school day and after school once a week. We would love your help once a week after school +/or Friday February 7th at the all day Workshop.
Are you Interested in Mentoring students as they put themselves to the challenge using fluid power (hydraulics) to build a device able to grasp, direct and move objects across a playing field?
We need your help to:
Encourage youth to think outside the box
Make sure that not just one team member is dominating the discussion, idea sharing, and building.
Encourage youth to understand their strengths and weaknesses and encourage the group to share those to see where each youth fits best.
Be a cheerleader.
Foster inquiry based learning. No answer is wrong, let your group work through the process.
Help your group understand time management when building and carrying out their design. Have them practice and time areas, so they know how to properly use their time.
Let them fail. Failure is OK, because a few failures sometimes end up with an awesome product. We learn more from failure than we do from always doing things right.
