SUBJECT: WORLDWIDE CIVIL UNREST

REF: STATE 15016NX392A

Classified By: Ambassador Robert D. McBurger for reasons 1.4 (b) and (d).

(C) Recent events have indicated that unrest is spreading across the globe. You have been tasked with creating a background briefing for the Prime Minister on the causes of unrest globally. You are to use data sets from the CIA archives to pinpoint causes of instability by comparing countries across the globe. Time is short, you must bring your data visualisations into a Google Slide presentation of eight slides each with a data graphic, Smore or another program that you discuss with the team leader. The focus questions for the briefing you must respond to, are contained below.

--------------------------

RESOURCES

--------------------------

You have been granted temporary access to the CIA archives, use the link below

https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook/rankorder/rankorderguide.html

Don't forget agent, you can download each data set as a text file.

------------------------

FOCUS QUESTIONS

------------------------

  1. Access to oil for a nation has been raised by the Department of Trade as a major factor in unrest. Compare a measure of oil access and a measure or measures of wealth. Evaluate and visualise.

  2. The Centre for Sustainable development has contacted the PM, they have made a strong case that oil production leads to negative outcomes for a nation, evaluate this and visualise your findings

  3. AusAid have identified that electricity may have a connection to the health of babies. Evaluate and visualise.

  4. The Department of Health contends that the biggest factor in the spread of AIDS is lack of school education. Evaluate and visualise.

  5. Department of Finance research may be indicating a link between high population growth and wealth. Evaluate and visualise.

  6. The ADF is concerned about the link between nations spending excessively on defence and not on other areas like health and education. They have been lobbying the PM to act. Visualise a measure of each of these together and compare.

  7. The Department of Infrastructure is lobbying for more money to be spent on Internet access for all Australians. Create a visualisation that evaluates whether Internet access is beneficial to a nation or not.

  8. The Department of Immigration has identified overcrowding as a primary cause of poverty and unrest. Select, evaluate and visualise data to support or refute this assertion.

------------------------

EVALUATION REPORT

------------------------

Please submit your after action evaluation report to ASIS GHQ Canberra and respond to these points-

  1. Which of your data visualisations do you think is the most effective? Explain why.

  2. Which of your data visualisations was the least effective? Explain how it could have been improved.

  3. Do you think the use of data visualisations made your task of identifying a cause of global unrest easier (i.e., more efficient)? Explain why or why not.

  4. Give an example of where you could use data visualisation in the future for your studies (in any of your subjects) and explain how it could be used.

------------------------

CONCLUSION

------------------------

The situation is critical, we are relying on you to help the PM understand the world more clearly and make the right decisions. Remember to eat your assignment after reading. The fate of the world depends on you.
