THESIS SENTENCE: FORESHADOWING

Throughout the novel, the author foreshadows and gives numerous clues to the unexpected ending of three of the characters.

Mike Is Mrs.Winterbottom's Son

The author give numerous clues that Mike is Mrs. Winterbottom's son. Sal opens Phobe's door and a teenager is standing there nervously, they didn't know what to do but to open the door, "I want to see Mrs. Winterbottom. Is she here, or what?" (Pg:43) The author is trying to hint to the reader that Mike is trying to talk to his birth mother without Sal and Phobe knowing. He was very nervous and that is why he was sweaty and was looking up and down the street.

Phobe and Sal break into Mrs. Partridge's house trying to find clues that Mrs. Cadaver has left about dead Mr.Cadaver. They are very suspicious about her killing her husband. As they are in the house, Mrs. Partridge is sitting in the corner. They start to talk about why they are trying to sneak in and as they are about to leave Mrs. Partridge says something to Phoebe as she puts her hand over her face, "Oh, Phoebe, I think i met your brother." (Pg:193) This is a big clue because Phoebe doesn't have a brother and if Mrs. Partridge felt a similar face with the same features then they must be related to Phoebe.

Sal's Mom Died In A Bus Accident

Sal was explaining what was going on and the reasons why they are taking the trip from Eulid, Ohio to Lewiston, Idaho. She gave three reasons and they were all really big clues, "Gram and Gramps wanted to see mamma who was resting peacefully in Lewiston, Idaho. Gram and Gramps knew I wanted to see momma but that I was afraid too. Dad wanted to be alone with the red headed Margaret Cadaver. He had already seen momma, and he had not taken me." (Pg:5) The author is trying to tell the reader that Sal's mom is dead and has been dead for a while in Lewiston.

Sal was driving the car down a steep hill while Gramps was at the hospital with Gram and she was doing this because she wanted to see her mother before her birthday so Gramps gave her the keys and already taught her how to drive, "As we approached each curve, I could see us smashing straight into a truck or tamper . Every time I saw a bus, I watched it sway. I watched its tires spin dangerously close to the gravel at the road's edge. I watched it plunge on, eating up the road, defying those curves." (Pg:227) Sal is imagining her mom's bus swaying back and fourth and almost going off the side.

Gram's death

The author gave many clues that Gram was dying. They were all at the Missouri River and Gram gets bit by a water moccasin, which is poisonous. Gram looses a lot of blood and isn't doing too well, "'Oh!', and flailed at the water. She reached down, pulled up a snake and gave Gramps a puzzled look."(Pg:95) This was the start of when Grams started to get ill and her health wasn't strong.

Sal, Gram, and Gramps all went to Old Faithful because Gram has wanted to see it her whole life and this was the first time, "Gram sniffled. 'Oh nothing, I'm so ahoy I got to see old faithful.'" Gram was actually crying because she knew it was the end of her life time and that she finally got to go before she died. She has wanted to go since she was a little girl.

CONCLUSION

The author foreshadows Mike as Mrs. Winterbottom's son, how Sal's mother died in a bus accident, and Gram's death. The author foreshadows these by using different clues throughout the story to make it hard for the reader to predict
