Arkansas Between the Wars

New Deal- CCC
The Civilian Conservation Corps was one of the most successful "New Deal" plans in Arkansas. AR had 65 CCC camps during the 9-year program. They built houses, telephone lines, and most importantly, state parks. Devils Den was one state parks they built.
El Dorado Oil Boom
The first real "boom town" in Arkansas was El Dorado. Before the oil boom there was 131 residents, after there was 25,000 people because so many people came to El Dorado to strike oil.
Return of the KKK
After Reconstruction, the KKK wasn't very active. Then a couple years later, membership for the Ku Klux Klan increased to 50,000 in AR. Beatings and lynchings increased in Arkansas.
The Flood of 1927
This was one of the worst floods in our nation's history, many counties had water up to 30 feet deep. Because of the flood that year, the state suffered property and farming damages of $50 million.
Bonnie & Clyde
Bonnie and Clyde were 2 wanted criminals around the country that caused a lot of havoc in Arkansas. They robbed many banks, shot a Marshall in Alma, and kidnapped a man near Berryville. They were finally shot in Louisiana, and their car had an Arkansas license plate.
