October is National Bullying Prevention Awareness Month

Every October, schools and organizations across the nation join STOMP Out Bullying in observing National Bullying Prevention Month. The goal is to encourage communities to work together to stop bullying and cyberbullying by increasing awareness of the prevalence and impact of bullying on all children of all ages. The explosion of social media apps has made it particularly easy for kids (and adults) to be cruel, especially when they feel they can attack others anonymously. Bullying can leave emotional scars well into adulthood, and adults who were bullied are more likely to have trouble keeping a job, maintaining relationships, and can be more prone to addiction.

Madras Middle School continually strives to create a culture of caring in our school community. Our core values, Eagles RISE include the values we work to live by daily (respect, integrity, safety, and empathy), and we have worked to communicate these expectations by:

  • holding individual administrative team talks each nine weeks to communicate expectations
  • equipping students with the knowledge needed to identify, to respond, and to report both unkind behavior or bullying behavior
  • teaching and promoting how to deal with conflicts, how to be a good friend, how to show kindness/empathy, and how to care for others through weekly advisement lessons, student service organizations, and daily announcements
  • recognizing students who exemplify our core values through daily Eagle Applause recipients, Eagle Pride honorees, Students of the Week, positive office referrals, and additional team/class recognition

In addition to the our ongoing focus on bullying prevention, our school will observe Bullying Prevention Month with activities planned by our counseling team.

Madras Middle School

ANTI-BULLYING MONTH ACTIVITIES

  • Students will announce facts about bullying each day over the intercom.

  • Eagle Ambassadors will create posters and banners to hang up around the school.

  • Wednesday, October 11th will be BLUE OUT day. Students and staff will wear blue to represent anti-bullying month official colors.

  • Friday, October 13th & Friday October 20th students will be encouraged to sit with students they don’t usually talk to during lunch. “No one eats alone day” Use #WeAreHereForYou on your social media.

  • Students will create a banner for kindness statements. Students will write kindness or empathy statements for one another during homeroom. The statements will be placed on the banners in each hallway and displayed during the week of October 10th and October 16th.

During National Bullying Prevention Month, parents are urged to talk to their children about the harm bullying can cause and ways they can protect themselves and others. It is critical that suspected bullying is reported right away to a counselor, administrator, or resource officer so that the incident can be investigated and preventive measures can be put in place. You can read more at https://www.stopbullying.gov/.

Duke University Talent Identification Program

What is the Duke Talent Identification Program Search?

The largest program of its kind, participants in the Duke TIP 7th Grade Talent Search identify academic strengths, develop abilities and interests, and celebrate their achievements at a crucial time when they are forming their identities and looking ahead to the future. TIP assists families in determining how advanced their students’ academic abilities are and what level of educational challenge is appropriate.

As part of the talent search enrollment, Duke TIP registers eligible seventh graders to take either the ACT (no Writing) or SAT (no Essay) as an above-level test. This allows students to have greater insight into their abilities and it gives them the opportunity to preview a college entrance exam.

Parents are invited to take a moment to learn about this talent search, its valuable benefits and resources designed specifically for academically talented youth, and its qualifications for enrollment.

Do I Qualify?

  • You must be in the seventh grade (or a current eighth grader who skipped seventh grade).
  • You must meet the test score requirements below.

Eligibility Requirements:

Students can be eligible for applying to Duke TIP if they meet any one of these criteria:

  • Georgia Milestones - Grade 5 ELA score of > 595

  • Georgia Milestones - Grade 5 Math score of > 604

  • Georgia Milestones - Grade 5 Social Studies score of > 574

Media Notes

by Karen Pitts, Media Specialist

Teen Read Week™ is a national adolescent literacy initiative created by the Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA). It began in 1998 and is held annually in October the same week as Columbus Day. Its purpose is to encourage teens to be regular readers and library users.

The 2017 event will be held Oct. 8-14th, featuring the theme 'Unleash Your Story." Library staff and other educators are encouraged to leverage this theme to encourage teens to tell their own stories as well as find stories, biographies, autobiographies, folktales, and more in their local library. Encourage your student to drop by the library and read something for enjoyment! We have opportunities available for your student to recommend a book to someone, take a selfie with the book that they are reading, and obtain a free bookmark for Teen Read Week at Madras! Encourage your student to READ FOR THE FUN OF IT!

Fall Picture Make-Up Day is October 23rd

Amy Brandon, PTSO President

Welcome to Madras! The purpose of our PTSO is to help improve our school by combining the efforts of parents, students, and teachers. We invite you to join PTSO to help make our school a better place to work and learn! Our fundraising efforts have benefited a variety of projects in the past including school building improvements, teacher instructional requests, equipment for the fine arts department, instructional technology purchases, and athletic programs. This year, our goal is to raise enough funds to purchase an electronic sign in front of the school to replace the old signage. We hope to reach this goal by the end of the school year. We ask that each family join PTSO with a $12.00 contribution. (Checks should be made payable to Madras PTSO.)

We also need your volunteer time! If you are interested in assisting with any of the areas below, please print the form below linked beneath, and indicate in the appropriate section. Return the form to the MMS front office or to your child's homeroom teacher. You will be contacted as the events take place.

There are many opportunities to serve through PTSO:

  • School Store (rotational schedule
  • Teacher Luncheons

Box Tops Update

By Gina Johnson, PTSO Box Top Coordinator

September BoxTops Update

The students and faculty did a great job clipping and turning in BoxTops for the month of September! So far, $609 worth of BoxTops has been clipped and will go towards the Madras school fund!

Keep those BoxTops coming in! The month of October homerooms will continue to collect BoxTops. The homeroom with the most turned in by the end of school on Friday, October 27th will be the winner of a Chick-Fil-A breakfast.

Reminder:

  1. Only BoxTops that have not expired will count.

  2. BoxTops can simply be placed in a baggie, but the baggie should be labeled with the student’s name and homeroom to get credit.

Thank you for thinking of Madras by remembering to clip those BoxTops! Download the BoxTops app or visit the BoxTops website http://www.boxtops4education.com/ for contests and more ways to earn for our school!

School Council Elections

As part of our district and school’s mission to ensure the success of every student, we encourage all parents, family members, and school community members to become actively involved in our schools. Currently there are 2 parent vacancies on our local school council for the 2017-2018 school year, and I would like to invite any parents who would like to submit nominations to do so by returning the nomination form (sent home with students) by Monday, October 23rd.

School Councils serve as advisory groups that

  • Improve communication and participation of parents and the community in the management and operation of local schools
  • Bring communities and schools closer together in a spirit of cooperation to solve education challenges
  • Improve academic achievement and provide support for teachers and administrators
  • Bring parents into the school-based decision-making process
  • Bring parents and the community together with teachers and school administrators to create a better understanding of mutual respect of each other’s concerns
  • Share ideas for school improvement and student learning

Local School Councils meet a minimum of four times throughout the year to discuss how they can best meet the educational needs of our students. The election process begins by submitting the nomination form to the front office no later than Monday, October 23rd. Ballots will be created based on the nominations and will be available to elect two members of the Madras School Council (unexpired 2 year term through June 2019) in the media center from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, October 24th. The announcement of new members will be made on Thursday, October 26th.

Serving on School Council is a wonderful opportunity to impact student learning and to support our school. Your voice and input are important, and your involvement is welcomed. Please feel free to email or call if you have any questions.
