Read Read Read...
• Reading aloud presents books as sources of pleasant, valuable, and exciting experiences. Children who value books are motivated to read on their own.
• Reading aloud gives children background knowledge, which helps them make sense of what they see, hear, and read. The more adults read aloud to children, the larger their vocabularies will grow and the more they will know about the world and their place in it.
• Reading aloud lets parents and teachers be role models for reading. When children see adults excited about reading, they will catch their enthusiasm.
• Reading aloud can introduce books and types of literature—poetry, short stories, biographies— children might not discover on their own.
• Reading aloud introduces the language of books, which differs from language heard in daily conversations, on television, and in movies. Book language is more descriptive and uses more formal grammatical structures.
• Reading aloud lets children use their imaginations to explore people, places, times, and events beyond their own experiences.

Flat Stanley
Dear Families,
We are reading Flat Stanley by Jeff Brown. In the book, Stanley gets crushed with a bulletin board. He’s fine, but now he’s flat! Luckily for us, that means he is very easy to travel with or can be folded into an envelope and sent anywhere in the world.
That leads us into a fun reading project with him! The children are coming home today with their own Flat Stanley. You are invited to take him anywhere you’d like for a little adventure (family trips, camping, to the beach, to grandparents’ house, to the store, to a sporting event, etc.) Flat Stanley can also be mailed to friends or family out of state or even out of the country! We’re hoping you’ll record his adventures and text any pictures to SES at 8704552198 or send them to dottiegoode@sheridanschools.org by Friday, December 16. Please include who, what, when and where information with your pictures. They will be shared in class and posted on our library bulletin board. We can’t wait to see all of the fun places Flat Stanley gets to visit!
For more information about Flat Stanley, visit this website http://www.flatstanleybooks.com! You’ll find games and activities for children, more about Flat Stanley books, and plenty of ideas for your adventures with Flat Stanley.
Thanks for making reading come alive!

Character Education: Word of the Month
In order to promote character education at SES, we are going to start showcasing our students who model the monthly character words. Mrs. Brown has lots of resources for teachers to use throughout the month of September to help promote the character word.
At the end of the month, we will ask teachers to nominate (can be with the help of the students) two students (one boy, one girl) who model the characteristics of the character education word of the month. During the last week of the month those students will be recognized with “Lunch with Mrs. Brown.” The students will receive lots of Sheridan goodies to take home as well. The students will be showcased on the bulletin board in each hallway throughout the following month.

Box Tops for Education
We are having a Box Top collection contest during the 2016-2017 school year. We will collect Box Tops from each class.
Box Tops Tips:
Please trim all excess off of all labels prior to turning them in; it saves us time and shipping. Please use the attached collection sheet and either glue or tape the box top in the square. Each filled page of box tops will amount to $3.00 and will be counted toward your child’s class. Please check the expiration dates prior to sending in. Bonus Box Tops have to be kept separate from regular box tops. Please make sure your child’s name and teacher are printed on the collection sheet.
