The Character Education Process
The designation as a National District of Character was awarded to only 4 school districts in the US. These schools now join with New Providence in a network of Schools of Character that serve as models and mentors to other educators and school districts.
Speaking about the award, Dr. David Miceli, Superintendent of Schools stated
“On behalf of the New Providence Board of Education, I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate our students, staff, parents, and administration for this national recognition. Their genuine commitment to the development and sustained implementation of our character education programs is recognized by this award. It is a privilege and honor to be 1 of 4 districts in the nation to be recognized as a District of Character.”
Effective Character Education
The accreditation body, Charcter.org, defines National Districts of Character as those that

- The school defines “character” comprehensively to include thinking, feeling, and doing.
- The school uses a comprehensive, intentional, and proactive approach to character development.
- The school creates a caring community.
- The school provides students with opportunities for moral action.
- The school offers a meaningful and challenging academic curriculum that respects all learners, develops their character, and helps them to succeed.
- The school fosters students’ self-motivation.
- The school staff is an ethical learning community that shares responsibility for character education and adheres to the same core values that guide the students.
- The school fosters shared leadership and long-range support of the character education initiative.
- The school engages families and community members as partners in the character-building effort.
- The school regularly assesses its culture and climate, the functioning of its staff as character educators, and the extent to which its students manifest good character.
