The Sailor Signal

Cottage Lake Elementary - August 19, 2021

Big picture

Cottage Lake is almost ready to set sail

Greetings Sailor Families!

I hope you all enjoyed a great summer and you are gearing up for the return to school. I sure have missed all our staff and students!

As we look to our launch of the school year, we are excited to welcome our new and returning Sailors for the 2021-22 school year. This year, students and staff will be in-person for learning. We look forward to a great year and moving forward in a way that enriches, challenges, and nurtures our community.

Our staff is busy getting the campus ready to receive our students in just a two short weeks. Similar to last year, each weekend I will send out a family newsletter containing information designed to get your family ready to return to school. As information keeps changing, we will do our best to keep you apprised of current happenings and details so you can plan accordingly.

A few things that we are still working on include:

  • District parameters for health and safety. District information will be posted here.
  • Staffing updates
  • Classroom placement for students
  • Procedures for arrival, lunch, recess, and dismissal
  • Cottage Lake Family Handbook

More to come! As we clarify these topics in addition to many others, we will share details with you.

Our staff is moving forward with this school year with optimism and excitement. This is a "new beginning" and we are ready to embark on all it has to offer. I will leave you with this quote from a book we are using to support the start of the school year.

"Now it is time to rebound. It's time to bounce back, come back better, and benefit from the many lessons learned to reignite engagement, accelerate learning, and move forward with a fresh optimism and better systems for schooling."

- Rebound by Fisher, Frey, Smith and Hattie.

Let's make this the best year yet, Sailors!

See you soon,

~ Jen Welch, Principal

August Meet the Teacher event

Save the date!

Thursday, August 26th, from 2:30-4:00 PM

Come say hello to your teacher, see your classroom, take a self-guided campus tour, and drop off your school supplies. Due to social distancing precautions, we will be spreading out our Meet the Teacher event by times assigned by student's last name. We ask that families come at the assigned times and then stay for that time period. This will help with the congestion in our parking lot, as well. Masks are required for all adults and students on campus.

Our Meet the Teacher scheduled times are as follows:

  • 2:30-3:00 PM... Last names beginning with letters A-G
  • 3:00-3:30 PM... Last names beginning with letters H-Q
  • 3:30-4:00 PM... Last names beginning with letters R-Z

We are looking forward to seeing you all soon and welcome students back to campus!

NSD Back to School Fair - August 28

Dear Northshore School District Families,

As we prepare to welcome students back to buildings for the first day of school, we are excited to partner with the Northshore Schools Foundation in hosting a Back-to-School Fair. This free event has historically served families in need, but we are expanding our reach this year to all families.

In addition to our community partners, information will also be available from a variety of District departments including, but not limited to: Transportation, Food & Nutrition Services, Student Services, Health Services, Multilingual Learners and Family Engagement, Learning Assistance Program (LAP), Title, Highly Capable Services and more.

A vaccine clinic is also scheduled to be at the event for any individual who is age 12 or older. For planning purposes, please complete this interest form if you or anyone in your family intend to be vaccinated during the Back-to-School Fair. The Foundation's Backpack for Kids Program will be supplying backpacks and supplies for families who are unable to purchase backpacks and supplies and who are registered with the Foundation.

The event takes place from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. on Saturday, August 28 at Pop Keeney Stadium (9809 NE 188th St, Bothell, WA 98011).

A big thank you to our many staff and partners for working together to help all of our students and families off to an amazing start to the school year! In an effort to keep our Northshore community safe, all attendees will be required to wear a face-covering while on the Pop Keeney campus.

To learn more about the event, visit our District website.

Welcome to Kindergarten!

We are getting ready to welcome our youngest sailors! Below is information regarding the start to the school year for our Kindergarten students and families.

I'd like to welcome you to the 2021-2022 school year! This is an exciting time for you and your families and I am excited to welcome you. As we look to the beginning of the school year, I wanted to provide you with some very important dates to mark on your calendars. You will notice on the first two days of Kindergarten, we will begin with a rolling start. This means half our students begin one day, and the other half begins the next. During these first two days, your student will attend ONE of the days, NOT both. The day your student attends is based on the first letter of your Last Name.

Below you will find dates that pertain to the beginning of Kindergarten.

  • Wednesday, September 1, 2021 - First Day of School for Kindergarten students with the LAST NAME beginning with letters A-L. (Students attend this day but NOT on 9/2/2021)
  • Thursday, September 2, 2021 - First Day of School for Kindergarten students with the LAST NAME beginning with letters M-Z. (Students attend this day but NOT on 9/1/2021)

  • Friday, September 3, 2021 - ALL Kindergarten students attend school together.

  • Monday, September 6, 2021 - NO SCHOOL - Labor Day observance

  • Tuesday, September 7, 2021 - No School for Kindergarten students. Teachers will be holding WaKIDS family conferences where they will meet with each family during one of these three conference days. Families will be asked to sign up for a date and time.

  • Wednesday, September 8, 2021 - No School for Kindergarten students. Teachers will be holding WaKIDS family conferences where they will meet with each family during one of these three conference days. Families will be asked to sign up for a date and time.

  • Thursday, September 9, 2021 - No School for Kindergarten students. Teachers will be holding WaKIDS family conferences where they will meet with each family during one of these three conference days. Families will be asked to sign up for a date and time.

  • Friday, September 10, 2021 - ALL Kindergarten students attend school together.

I hope this information you find helpful. Please mark your calendars with this information. After September 10, your student will follow the regular Northshore calendar for elementary-aged students.

First Day of School - September 1, 2021

This year, we welcome all K-5 grade students as they start the 2021-2022 school year the first week of September. While Kindergarten has a staggered start, all our Cottage Lake students will start school either September 1 or September 2. Welcome all Sailors!

Classroom Placement

Classroom placement letters will be mailed home to families on Friday, August 20. There are still changes happening at the school, so please know anything you may find online is not finalized until next week. I am reviewing lists for final balancing and placing all our new students. We will also be turning on ParentVue teacher placements on Tuesday, August 24.

Over the summer, I watched our enrollment numbers extremely closely. We have continued to lose a few students since June, but we have also gained a few, as well. This is great news! I want our little school to grow!

Due to numbers, we will have a 4/5 split during this upcoming year. I have worked with staff as we identified those students to be placed into this split class. Special consideration was placed into creating this class and I believe we will have a great year ahead! Thank you for your continued support for our staff and students.

For those students who will be starting the school year virtually, I would predict you should receive information in the near future. I am not aware of specifics for our virtual program, but I will share details as I learn them.

Bus Routes

Bus routes and stops will be posted on the E-Link the week before school starts. Bus routes will not be mailed out.

How will students be receiving devices this year?

This fall each of our students will be assigned a device. Our K-1 students will have an iPad checked out to them that will stay at school. Our 2nd-5th grade students will have a Chromebook checked out to them that will go to and from school. We will send out more information soon.
