Juniors Start "On To College" with John Baylor
SAT Prep During the School Day
Beginning February 25, all Juniors will be participating in the highly acclaimed SAT prep course from John Baylor's On to College. In this program, Juniors (only) will spend 20 days in skills review and strategic test taking skills targeting the SAT test. The program is presented by John Baylor and can be reviewed at: https://www.ontocollege.com
Students will spend approximately 4-6 days in each of the 4 major core areas, English, Math, Science, and Social Studies, reviewing core skills that they need to have to be successful on the SAT. The course is a mixture of video and online learning, along with direct teaching from our instructors. There are 2 different levels of the course to accommodate those students that are in our specialized classrooms. All work will be done in class during the school day. Students will not only review core skills, but they will also learn testing tips and tricks to help them deal with the stress of the testing environment. On April 4, John Baylor will be at WNHS to help energize and focus the students right before the test. Remember that the SAT is a graduation requirement for all juniors. The test will be given on April 9. It is very important that your student not miss any of the On To College Prep sessions.
If you are looking for dates to schedule appointments and needs outside of school, please be aware of the following schedule so that your student does not miss any of the program:
English sessions: February 25-28, and March 4-5 in English classes only
Math sessions: March 11, 13-19 in Math classes only
Social Studies sessions: March 7-8, and March 21-22 in Social Studies classes only
Science sessions: April 1-5 in Science classes only. Any student that is not enrolled in a Science class as a Junior will be pulled from either PE or Study Hall to participate in the science sessions.
We have high hopes that this will better prepare all our students for this test. The website shown in the first paragraph above provides much information about the prep program and valuable information for parents as you prepare your students for life after high school. If you have any further questions about the program, please do not hesitate to call.
College Fair for all Students....and Parents Too!
These college fairs bring representatives from a broad range of colleges/universities and vocational training institutions to high school juniors and seniors, providing them a unique opportunity to become aware of their many options and to compare the offerings of participating institutions. We strive to provide students with current available scholarship and grant information. We have partnered with the Hispanic Scholarship Fund to help us achieve our goals of helping minority students gain the widest access to the resources available to them.
While this event is sponsored by NHCF, it is intended for all students in our county. WNHS is lucky to have been chosen to sponsor this event on March 12. Students from all over McHenry County will visit this fair. Parents are also invited and encouraged to attend. As we get closer to the event, we will be able to give parents the exact times that their student will be in the Fair so that you can visit together and discuss options. Students will attend during a period of the day. March 12 is a minimum day to allow for building SIP activities.
This is great way to begin gathering information as a Junior, or to solidify your options as Senior, for what you would like to do after high school. Please use this link to go to their website if you would like more information. https://collegefair.info
As always, we will be glad to answer any questions. Please contact Amanda Harmer at ext. 7750.

Is Your Student Vaping?
Please know that we have a variety of intervention options for you and your student. Unfortunately sometimes, students who are vaping at school must be assigned the appropriate school disciplinary consequence. But, students will also be offered an array of options meant to help them understand and choose more healthy options. Students who indicate they have a problem and ask for help will not be subject to any disciplinary consequences for doing so. We have a drug, alcohol, and addiction specialist, Connee Meschini, with us all the time. She is an excellent resource and can connect you and your family with many different options for services throughout McHenry County. D200 has also been very proactive in providing in house resources and has partnered with Rosecrance. Rosecrance is an evidence-based outpatient mental health and substance abuse treatment option for all families. Their services include adult and adolescent substance abuse intensive outpatient and individual treatment plans.
Please do not hesitate to reach out to your Assistant Principal or your Counselor should you have any questions. The website shown in the picture above has an interesting approach to teaching your teen about vaping. Check it out at this link for a site produced by the FDA.
