We Don't Tell You Everything
As your child grows and develops and learns to take ownership of their own behavior, how we deal with discipline at Wredling shifts. Compared to elementary school, where you may have heard about many of the issues in the classroom, here, we simply manage most of them.
When a child receives a couple of lunch detentions for fooling around on the bus, for making a mess in the cafeteria, or for not wearing an ID, we don't call you. We want your child to learn that they are responsible for their behavior and there are times when they need to face it on their own terms. Some kids may choose to tell their parents, but many do not. (Would you?)
We do call if:
- An issue has become chronic and we see negative behaviors repeatedly.
- If a student is not learning the lesson from smaller consequences.
- If an issue is bigger, such as fighting, drug and alcohol issues, and things of a more serious nature.
While I realize that some parents may not like this, we do know when to call you and when to let your child manage a consequence on their own. This is one of the first steps they will take in becoming more responsible for their own behaviors and understanding that there are consequences for their actions. We want them to learn how to manage a mistake and then fix the issue. We want them to learn this on the smaller things as the bigger issues have larger consequences and suddenly move out of their control - when parents, the office, and even the police may become involved.
We want kids to make mistakes. It is how they learn. One of my favorite quotes is, "It's not how we make mistakes, but how we correct them that defines us."
