Dear Redbud families,


Can you believe that summer has flown by and the 2021-2022 school year is about to start? We hope you and your family have had a nice, peaceful break this summer. We are so excited to welcome your children back to school, and most excited about them getting to experience the excitement of being the first class to open Redbud Elementary School. I know each of them and you will be proud of this magnificent building, and ecstatic when you meet our Redbud staff.


I want to notify you of a few changes in our EPS elementary procedures. Please know that all of our procedures are always established for the safety of your children. While some procedures may initially appear inconvenient for adults, we make decisions based on what is best for students.


Unlike last year, this year we are excited to welcome students back into the building for our Meet the Teacher event on Tuesday, August 10th. You should have a time slot scheduled with your school to stop by between 3:30-6:00 to meet your child's teacher, see the classroom, sign up to assist with PTO, and pick up your car tag for dismissal. You might have also chosen to sign up for a virtual spot Meet the Teacher spot from 3:00-3:30.


On the first day of school, all students not arriving by bus or daycare will have a designated area by grade outside of the school building where all students will gather with school staff to enter the beautiful halls of Redbud Elementary School. Guests who are escorting their child(ren) to school on the first day will remain outside of the building as the students enter with their teacher or a Redbud Staff member to begin their day. There will be plenty of teachers and staff available around the corridor of the building to assist any students in finding their child's teacher.


Continuing with the practice of health and safety, there will be no guests at lunch except on special occasions throughout the year, which will be designated by the principal (more information regarding this to come on Back to School Night.) Water fountains will be closed unless they are bottle-filling only stations. Redbud is so lucky to have more than 10 water bottle filling stations throughout the campus. Therefore, like last year, children are encouraged to bring a daily water bottle to school with them.


We are continuing the use of our car rider plus program for parent dismissal each day. However, even if your child is a bus rider, daycare rider, on-site before/aftercare attendee, or in some cases, a walker - ALL students will receive a backpack tag and each family will be given a corresponding car tag number. This will aid us in reunification if there were to ever be a situation in which parents would need to pick their child(ren) up from school.


Please remember as we begin another school year, it always takes a couple of weeks for our routines to be established. Be patient with staff, students, and other parents or guardians as everyone learns the drop-off and pick-up procedures.

School Information

SCHOOL HOURS - 9:20 am - 3:55 pm

Office hours are held from 8:50-4:25


Front doors open at 8:50 for drop-off. Teachers provide supervision beginning at 8:50 am. Students are NOT to arrive before 8:50, and please do not leave students waiting outside before this time. Roadrunners will go directly to their classrooms. Students are allowed to eat the free breakfast in the cafeteria if their parents wish. Students should arrive at the cafeteria BEFORE 9:10 in order to have time to eat and not to be late to class. The tardy bell rings at 9:20.


K-5

Pre-K pickup will be in the bus loop located behind the school. You will enter from Douglas between 3:25-3:35.


Meet the Teacher Day - Aug 10th

The district sent all enrolled families an email towards the end of July regarding Utility Bill Online Verification and Meet the Teacher information and a link for you to sign up for times. There will be one virtual time and several in-person appointments (which is highly suggested for young and new students). The PTO will have tables set up in the cafeteria for their usual information and sales. Parents and students are asked to please follow social distancing protocols during their time at the school.


If your enrollment is complete, you will get an email around 6:00 pm Monday the 9th from your child's teacher. If you do not receive that email, there must be some kind of enrollment deficiency and you will need to contact the school office the next day, the 10th after 11:00 am to clear that up. You should already have gotten a phone call if you have any of these deficiencies. Some common deficiencies are not turning in a valid July or August utility bill, immunizations, and not completing the annual update in the parent portal.


First Day Procedures - Aug 12th

Due to continued virus mitigation safety procedures, parents and guests may not enter the building on the first day. There will be an adult/safety patrol for PK, K, new students, and anyone else needing assistance getting to their classroom. Parents may choose to park in the parking lot and walk their children to the designated spot where e they can say goodbye. If parents choose to do this, you must use the crosswalk and walk to the awning. This is just like last year - so parents, please don't worry. Last year, there were actually fewer tears than in previous years!

Student Absences

Please call in all student absences to the attendance line at 405-726-5060 by 9:30 for EACH day your student will be sick or late. If your student is going to be late to school for any reason, please make sure to let our office know ahead of time (if possible) by calling our attendance line by 9:30 that morning. This number rings to a voicemail that is available 24 hours a day!


EARLY CHECKOUT is discouraged and will count toward their total absences.

Students will not be called out of class until a parent is present to sign them out. Please plan ahead for appointments as students are learning from bell to bell and will miss valuable instructional class time when checked out.

The A, B, C's of our CARLOOP for drop and Pick Up Procedures

Our carloop can be a breeze if you follow these simple rules:

A. Always follow the instructions of the staff members on duty in our car loop.

B. Be aware, cautious, and considerate of other drivers, students, and teachers on our school grounds.

C. Cell phone use in the loop could cause distractions.

D. Display car tag clearly from rearview mirror.

Car Rider Plus

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS


What happens if I forget to put my CAR RIDER PLUS TAG in my car? You will have to park your car in a parking space, go inside to the office, and present your driver’s license to the office staff to prove verification.


Can I use the CAR RIDER PLUS TAG to check out my student during regular school hours? NO, you must present your driver’s license during regular school hours.


Can I show my driver’s license to the duty teacher instead of the CAR RIDER PLUS TAG? NO, the duty teacher will only dismiss your child if you have the CAR RIDER PLUS TAG. You will need to park in a parking space, go inside to the office, and show your driver’s license for verification if you do not have your CAR RIDER PLUS TAG.


Can my friend or a grandparent pick up my child from the car line? Yes, but they will need to have the CAR RIDER PLUS TAG with them to pick up your child. If they do not have the card, they will go to the office and present their driver’s license. If their name is listed in the parent portal, they will be allowed to leave with your child.


Can my child go home with a friend’s parent? If the friend’s parent has your child’s CAR RIDER PLUS TAG, then your child will be dismissed with them. If they do not have the CAR RIDER PLUS TAG, they must go to the office and present their driver’s license for verification. If their name is in the parent portal, then your child will be allowed to leave with them.


Can I receive more than the 2 allotted car rider plus window tags? Yes, you are allowed to purchase additional tags for $5.00 each.

Lunch and recess

Lunch and Recess procedures will change slightly due to COVID safety measures.


Lunch: Students will sit in the cafeteria with their class. District procedures state no parents can have breakfast or lunch with their child in the cafeteria this year. We hope this changes in the future. Door Dash or any other delivery from outside sources will not be permitted.


Recess: As long as possible, students will still have outside recess when weather permits. Roadrunners will go outside if the temperature is less than 100 degrees and higher than 32 degrees. This does include the heat index and Windchill.


Redbud's Playground: Many of you have noticed that Redbud's Playground has not yet been installed. Unfortunately, due to product shortage, this is one thing that has taken a bit longer to install than anticipated. However, with over 50 acres of beautiful property, basketball goals, soccer goals, 4 square courts, and countless outdoor games, we can ensure you that your children will have a blast while spending their free time outdoors with their friends.

Projects, Events, Guests

While practicing safety measures, our district is planning to hold special events and music programs in person. Each event will have specific details outlined beforehand.


Guests: There can be limited guests in the building to protect our students and staff by minimizing possible exposures to COVID, these guests would be volunteers in the PTO room and teacher help in the workrooms, not classrooms. RedBUDs, formally knows as WatchDOGS would also be permitted at this time. District procedures also state no parents can have breakfast or lunch with their child in the cafeteria this year. Again, we hope more can open up as the year goes on.


-Appointments for meetings and conferences can be prearranged with the teacher and principal.

*All of these approved guests must participate in a screening, including temperature check and symptom questions.

Arrival and Dismissal

PK-5 Arrival: As mentioned above, children can be dropped off as early as 8:50. If students are dropped off by car, please utilize the entrance to the school from Coffee Creak and remain in the car rider drop-off and pick-up line. Safety patrol and Redbud Staff will be outside to greet your children and ensure they get to their classrooms safely. Reminder, no adults will be authorized to enter the building during morning drop off.


Bus Riders: Elementary students may be eligible for transportation services. Students may ride only their regularly assigned bus and get off at their regularly assigned stop unless emergency arrangements have been made through the Director of Transportation. Food, gum, and soft drinks are prohibited on the bus. Damage to seats and other equipment must be paid for by the offender. Students are permitted to ride the bus as long as they abide by the bus rules they receive at the beginning of the year. The bus rules are listed in the District section of this handbook. Students should always get off at their bus stop and report home before going to a friend’s house to play. The Transportation Department can be reached at 340-2962.


ALL PARENTS WHO PICK UP THEIR CHILD(REN) AFTER SCHOOL MUST HAVE A PICK-UP TAG FOR IDENTIFICATION


Car Riders: For the morning, parents may choose to park in the parking lot and walk their children to the door where they can say goodbye. If parents choose to do this, you must use the crosswalk and walk to the awning. (ALL car riders are to use the front loop) A plan has been designed to ensure greater student safety and facilitate smoother traffic flow. Families who wish to drop off or pick up their children by car should only use the drive-through area at the front of the building. Also, parents in cars are asked to not cut in front of other cars waiting in line. Please follow the detailed drop-off and pick-up procedures below:


Parents who wish to pick up their children after school must enter campus using the main entrance. Cars should enter the campus using the Coffee Creek entrance and pull completely forward around the curb to the loop, allowing other cars to line up behind them. Please do not block traffic or double-park your car. Students are expected to unload/load 6 at a time at the front entrance, under the supervision of a duty teacher and safety patrol. Stay in line even if you have your child, follow the loop around the curb until you exit out of the loop.


Please yield to school and daycare buses as they have a tight schedule they must follow.


Parents and guests must follow the requests and directions of the duty teachers. All other traffic lanes, entrances, and exits are expressly reserved for district transportation, mini-buses, and commercial daycare vans. Your cooperation with these procedures is appreciated and is for the safety of your child.


DISMISSAL PROCEDURES: For the safety of our students, please be aware of the after-school pick-up procedures:


K-5 Dismissal: Dismissal for K-5 is at 3:55 P.M. All K-5 students should be picked up by 4:10 P.M.


Like last year, the Car Rider Plus dismissal release system will be in effect. Students will remain in their classroom until their car/bus/daycare arrives.

  1. The car loop procedure experience for parents won’t change much. We will use a system called Car Rider Plus and it will go fast- you can view an example of it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N5r9sLB1zTY&t=3s

  2. There will NOT be Parent Walkup to pick up children.

  3. There will NOT be any student walkers this school year.

*Each student will carry a dismissal tag on the loop of their backpack with personal information- this is particularly important for younger students who have not yet memorized this information.

*Please do not remove this backpack tag. If it falls off, notify your child’s teacher immediately for a replacement. This tag is color-coded depending on your child’s dismissal location.

*This year there will be an additional layer of safety added with another backpack tag with the CAR RIDER PLUS number. Do not remove this tag either.


*At 3:55 PM, students will prepare to be dismissed from their classroom, younger grades will be escorted to their dismissal location inside the building. A teacher will be present to monitor students while they are waiting and also dismissing.

*Parents are to use the appropriate driveway loop and must clearly display a CAR RIDER PLUS tag on their car’s rearview mirror. This helps the duty teachers call for students and to quickly load them into vehicles. This greatly reduces the wait time for parents in line.

*Parents are the primary role models for their children. Cooperating with and respecting the staff members on duty sets a good example of respect for authority. Thank you!

*Additional duty teachers and safety patrol will manage loading vehicles by calling out students’ names to line up at the designated spots so that the car line can move quickly.

*Students must remain seated until their name is called, then go directly to the assigned spot and wait until their parent pulls forward completely and stops.

*Additional parent pickup tags are available for purchase in the front office to parents with a valid driver’s license.

*Parents may not park in the parking lot, walk between cars, and call for students to come to them-- this creates major safety concerns and confusion while the duty teachers attempt to perform their responsibilities.


*For the safety of your child, all adults must have a CAR RIDER PLUS tag to identify to the duty teacher you are the designated adult to pick up that student. Parents or family members who do not have a visor card will be asked to go to the office and show proper identification. For the safety of your child, students will not be released to those without proper ID and who are not listed on the contact sheet in the office.


Changing transportation: It is not advised to change your child’s manner of home transportation, however, circumstances may arise that warrant that occasionally. Students who are to go home using an alternate method from their normal procedure (bus, daycare, etc.) must have a parent contact the office prior to 2:45 PM notifying us of the change. Parents should work with their child and accurately rehearse any transportation changes with them the night before and call the office to notify us of the change in transportation plans. Children who tell us that they are going home differently than their regular method and do NOT have a note will be sent home the regular way. This greatly alleviates confusion for everyone! Students are responsible for getting in the correct bus or daycare lines and shall not switch lines unless we have information about pre-arranged changes in transportation.

Meet the Redbud Counselors

Our Redbud counselors are Megan Price and Jenni Hess. They are an integral part of the administrative team, working closely with administrators, teachers, and parents to support students.


The Redbud school counseling program supports students and parents through classroom guidance lessons, crisis intervention, and consultation/collaboration. Classroom guidance lessons are taught in the classroom by the counselor and focus on key topics that apply to the student body. Students are instructed in topics that are relevant in their day-to-day lives and are given tools to utilize in daily situations. Consultation and collaboration are highly utilized in the counseling office in order to best serve students and parents.

Label Everything

Label all lunch containers, thermos, backpacks, jackets, and other outerwear clothing with the name of the owner. If an item is found with a name, it will be returned to the owner. Unlabeled items will be disposed of and/or given to a local charitable organization periodically during the year. Valuable items will be located in the Main Office.

The How To's of Parent Portal

INFORMATION ABOUT PARENT PORTAL

  • Only parents and legal guardians can access Parent Portal
  • To access the portal, you must first fill out the pink Parent Portal form in the office and show a valid driver's license (if you haven't already done so).
  • Once our registrar grants you access, you will receive an email (only on Mondays or Thursdays), click the link in the email within 24 hours to set up your username and password.
  • You can then set up the Parent Portal as a mobile app on your mobile device.
  • Report cards are only available on the Parent Portal. You can print them from the reports section every 9 weeks for a limited time.


TO VIEW YOUR CHILD'S GRADES

1) Log into your mobile app or account on the computer

2) Choose the child

3) Click grades

4) You are able to set up your notification preferences in order to get notified if certain conditions about grades or attendance are met


IF YOU USE THE MOBILE APP, BE SURE TO HIT "REFRESH" OFTEN, OR YOU WILL SEE OUTDATED INFORMATION


HOW TO PRINT YOUR CHILD'S REPORT CARD EACH 9 WEEKS

1) Log into your Parent Portal account on your computer

2) Choose the child

3) Click Reports

4) Click View Report Card, then you can print from there

Report cards are only available to print for a limited time. If you need a copy, you can request one from the school office.


ALL CHANGES TO HOUSEHOLD ADDRESS, HOUSEHOLD MEMBERS, OR UPDATES TO MEDICAL OR LEGAL ALERTS MUST BE MADE IN PERSON AT THE SCHOOL


HOW TO EDIT PHONE NUMBERS, EMAILS, and ADD/REMOVE OTHER CONTACTS: (TO ALLOW PICK UP OF YOUR CHILD)

1) Log into your Parent Portal account on your computer (not phone)

2) Choose the child - you will need to do this for each child separately

3) Click on the demographic button on left side of screen

4) Click the Blue "Add Contact" button and add the information you want

Please Note: By adding a Non-Household Contact, you are giving permission for that person to pick up your student or be contacted if you are not available. Please do not enter email addresses for Non-Household contacts. Only phone numbers will be used.

Parent Portal Access

Parent Portal is a website that allows parents to access information about the student, such as current grades, attendance, print report card, & contact info.

School Supplies

The Redbud supply list is located below. It is highly encouraged to bring all supplies on Meet the Teacher Day so your children are not responsible for carrying it ALL in on the first day of school.

A note from Nurse Valerie

Dear Parent(s)/Guardian(s):


Thank you so much for trusting us with your students. We are so excited to see everybody and get this awesome year started!


If you plan to leave medication at school for your child please be prepared to drop this off on Tuesday evening during Back-to-School night. If you are unable to drop medication off on Tuesday evening, please get in touch with Valerie Johnson (school nurse) to arrange a time for drop-off. All medications on school property must be accompanied by a medication authorization form (attached) signed by both a licensed prescriber and a parent/guardian.


All prescription medications must come in their original packaging with a prescription label that matches the orders given on the medication authorization form. Over-the-counter medications must be in a new, unopened container.

If your child will be carrying emergency medication (inhalers, epi-pens, pancreatic enzymes), please note that we still must have a medication authorization on file. School policy also states that it is the parent's responsibility to provide medication to be kept at school in case of emergency.


We will also be collecting all other medical forms on Tuesday evening. You can also email forms to Valerie Johnson at valerie.johnson@edmondschools.net.


If your child has severe allergies, asthma, or a history of seizures, you can find the appropriate action plans attached to this email. If your child has other conditions you would like to discuss with the nurse, please email Valerie Johnson.
