It only took a few minutes before a timeout was called for a special presentation in Friday night's boys basketball game. In front of a home crowd, on Hall of Fame night, Woodhams scored his 1,000th career point. The student section was ready with cheers and signs and Coach Dennis was ready with a special award for the elite honor. Congratulations, Charlie!
Kids Heart Challenge
Hundreds of our students are learning how to be heart healthy with the kickoff of the Kids Heart Challenge to raise money for the American Heart Association. Alamo and Dix Street held assemblies on Friday to introduce the program and had a lot of fun with this year's friends who will guide them to great heart health! Reach out to any Alamo or DSE student if you're interested in donating to this year's Kids Heart Challenge.
Bookstore Celebration
Kindergartners at DSE aren't just readers, they're incredible writers! They wrote several stories about themselves, worked on revising, and even published a piece. They celebrated their hard work this week by opening a bookstore with their final works and invited their Reading Buddies to come in to purchase them with special "Bulldog Bucks". The students were so proud!
Music Appreciation
Washington Street Elementary students learned more about music in a visit from the Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra's String Quartet. They played several songs for them and also explained each instrument and how they add to musical selections.
Souper Bowl Success
The NFL's Super Bowl is Sunday, but Alamo's Souper Bowl ended Friday and it was a huge success! The school doubled last year's collection and boxed up 3,151 items for Christian Neighbors. Congratulations to Mrs. Trumley's class for winning the Souper Bowl, her class brought in more than 1,000 items! Kids packed up the donations and delivered them to Christian Neighbors.
Be Nice Spreading the Love
The Be Nice club got February off to a lovely start Friday. Staff members walked into school and were greeted with a giant heart and nice message created by the Be Nice team.
Geography Bee Winner at OMS
Congratulations to 8th grader Dylan Robrahn on winning the OMS Geography Bee! The 10 finalists competed Wednesday afternoon. Alicyn Klok (8th grade) was the runner up. Dylan will now take an online test to see if he'll advance to the state Geography Bee this spring. Good luck, Dylan!
SADD Assembly Focuses on Texting and Driving
The end of the day at the high school focused on a serious topic. Armed with startling statistics of the dangers of texting and driving, the OHS SADD chapter put on an assembly with facts, video messages and information from law enforcement. They handed out bracelets with their slogan "Put Down Your Phone If You Want To Get Home" to each student and asked them to sign a pledge not to text and drive.
Junior Achievement
Otsego parent and School Board Member, Shannon Goodwin, is teaching the Junior Achievement Program to the Dix Street 5th Graders this year. This week's lesson was titled "Free to Choose your Work or Business." Kids learned how prices affected the buying decisions of their classmates. Thanks to Shannon and all of our JA volunteers across the district!
