To arms, to arms! Over the land, over the sea.

Geography

This beautiful country is located on the Iberian Peninsula and is the westernmost country of Europe. It is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the west and south, and borders Spain to its north and east side.

History

The Portuguese Republic, often known as Portugal is one of the oldest European countries known to be founded, as it gained independence in 1143 from the Kingdom of Leon after the Battle of Ourique. Ever since, Portugal has remained an independent country. The kingdom of Portugal lasted for nearly 800 years. Since 1910, the country has been a republic. The modern democratic republic was founded in 1976. Also, Portugal has had fourteen flags ever since its establishment and the current flags holds a very cultural, and historical meaning. The flag displays a green and red background, red representing the revolution of 1910, and green representing hope. The center of the flag contains a blue shield, giving respect to the first king of Portugal, Alfonso VI, and the surrounding dots show the wounds of Jesus Christ.

Portugal's Partnership With The European Union

On January 1, 1986, Portugal joined the European Union and dropped the currency they were using prior to the Euro, a Portuguese Escudo. Portugal wasn't an original founder of the European Union, but it was an early member. Now, the European Union has about 28 members.

To the right, both a Euro (on the top) and a Portuguese Escudo (bottom) is displayed.
